Is it worth building a 5EFTE?

hi members.

ive got a AE82 and i had a 4EFTE in it with a T28T3 turbo that made 150WHP at 9PSI
engine now is sold.

i do have an extra 4EFTE for spares. pistons not useable

What i want to know is, is it worth the money and stress to build a 5EFTE?
when i say stress iam talking about that the 5E engines are expensive in South Africa
and you dont get any parts for it. Have to get forged rods because what do i do if
a rod snaps and damages crank and ruins the block..

if iam going to do the 5EFTE build iam going to have to spend AUD530 on rods shipped by maxspeedingrods. and pistons? $600?

and i cant find a place selling proppar crank bearings for the 5efhe(are all 5E bearings the same?)
Raceeng has bearings.http://www.raceeng.com/c-4093-engine-bearings.aspx
how good are those King bearings? any other places with better prices?

if i go with the 5EFTE i should be able to use a GT2860 or simular with less lag compared to the 4EFTE and actualy use the turbo HP rating better.

on the otherside rods and pistons for 4EFTE from ebay are $810 for that wiseco and scat set is not bad
and i can get ACL duraglide 780 rodbearings for R160+-$22 localy

so is it worth buying a 5E and putting it in as is and later on forge and boost it?

Using aftermarket 128bit 100rpm increment management :)

in my opinion for circuit or street then yes... for drag... no.

out of the fastest 3 EP's in the world 2 of them is 4e. gime a dog box and ill smash the 5e's time.:)

actualy i dont even think id need 1,if am bothered ill raise the boost and do it.:D

why wouldn't you advise it for drag?
just asking out of curiosity

faster/lighter revving, shorter piston travel, more of a square engine & since down the qtm ur always going to launch with boost at least at 6000rpms the lower down torque u get from the 5e is pretty much useless, as ur never in that rev range...

its just my opinion bud... its not the rule of thumb lol..

a higher displacement does not necessarily mean faster times.. especially considering the 5e gets its extra cc's by having a longer stroke.. which is not what you want on a high revving engine...

but you have to ask yourself,if those fast 4e starlets were 5e how much quicker would they be

Now your talking :)spuddy will have a nice running 5e this year when its up and running I've no doubt it will be the fastest fwd starlet .with his setup from calculations it should run 9s easy .well it better with all that money and parts gone into it .

Both engines have strengths and weaknesses, any car can do a 9 if you take the time to build it.

The low to mid range torque of a 5E is due to the valve timing, set it up like a 4E and it goes like a 4E, I personally like the extra 200ccs but that said, you don't need to spool the turbo an extra 500rpm earlier on the drag strip, as Hybrid says just launch it at what ever you need it at.

I still fancy building a 4E next just to see, use all my current parts but a 4E bottom end, I bet it goes just as fast on the strip.
