Oil Cooler Kits

Anyone used a universal kit or built one up themselves?

Don't fancy paying £400 for a GREX one.

Saw This One on Ebay.

Do these hoses look long enough to relocate just behind the front bumper like the GREX kit? Would help if anyone had the measurement of the GREX kit.

Thanks.

you'll need a thermostat as well, it's usually a bad thing if the oil is constantly curculating within the oilcooler as it will take ages to get up to operating temp.

Beat to it not once but twice :(

buy yourself a good quality core off ebay then source the fixings etc and your done, thats what me and Nick did with our oil coolers. As above though you do need a thermostat to get the oil upto temp asap ;)

Could drop Nick a u2u im sure he'll be able to help you out or source you the parts :)

sorry to sound ill informed, but when you say an thermostat, do you mean one in addition to the stock unit, or something to replace the existing one...something more high performance?

I would like to sometime in the future make my own kit as well......without paying and arm and leg

a seperate thermostat specifically for the oil cooler.

standard cars dont have have a thermostat for the oil, only for the water.

Hi guys,

I know about the thermo, don't worry. I thought you could buy them seperately??

Seen some at www.merlinmotorsports.co.uk

Mike,

Which bits did you buy, including lengths etc? And which temp thermo did you go for?

Most if not all of our kits came off ebay iirc.
I've got a Serck 16 row cooler on mine, we just bought a few metres of oil hose as we werent too sure how much we needed for both cars. Nick will know how much you'll need for a Starlet.

Then got a new sandwich plate with takeoffs for the cooler and a mocal inline stat. works a treat :) opens around 80 degrees

So you are just using normal oil hose rather than fancy braided stuff as per the above kit then?

What temps do you see while giving it some then? I know you stat opens at 80c, but this does not mean the temps will stay at 80c. What do they stay at?

Cheers mate!

best to go off Nicks really, yeah were on normal hose not the fancy braided stuff, can be replaced if its showing wear :)

The oil holds between 80-85 on the motorway and when giving it some beans on the road it never goes over 90. At Japfest I believe he saw upto 115 though when chasing down those Evo's :p hence why he is considering a bigger core (his is 10 row I believe atm)

where is the seperate thermostat mounted? inline with the cooler or is that the portion that goes before the oil filter in that sandwich plate thing?

Ahh I see OK.

Guess the the big core size won't have any negative effects on the road because it has a thermostat and if it dropped below the thermostat opening temp, it would close again anway...

115c is a bit cheeky eh..120c and above is testing the oil a bit I'd say!

mine is situated inline, in between the sandwich plate and the oil cooler core

OK, thanks for you help.

I really want to join you guys on track.

Just purchased a TRD LSD and will rebuilding the gearbox. Obviously now looking into an oil cooler. Already got my chassis mods sorted, so after the above work I should be ready! Nick did very well at 1bar..so lets see how 1.4bar looks on track :D Obviously driver skill comes into it too ;)

I have emailed the guy about thermostats and larger row coolers, so will let post here when I get a reply for others that are interested.

Might drop Nick a message about the hose lengths.

Cheers.

no probs, the LSD is essential on track imo, Nick was struggling to get the power down at 1bar coming off the chicanes in 3rd! that was using Toyo R888s too. 1.4bar would be crazy if you can make it last on track for long :p

Would need to monitor water and oil temps closely! see you at Trax??? ;)
