Just today i noticed my temp gauge was really high!! So i got to work and cleaned and flushed the whole radiator system and changed the coolant. Let the car warm up to proper temp but the car wasnt blowing out warm air? Took it a blast up the road and the heatin gauge hit the roof! Put the heating on flat out and it dropped to normal temp but when its off it rises :s

Sounds like the stat could be stuck closed chap. Seen it happen before.

Worth also checking the waterpump is still being driven by the fan belt in case that has fell off.

Keep it away from the top of the gauge as you could be doing more damage. Headgasket could fail and head could warp due to excess heat.

If the water is circulating out of the engine, the top rad hose will get hot in a few minutes. After maybe 5 minutes or a little longer, the bottom rad should get hot, if not then you may have a blocked rad.

how hot is it indicating on your gauge when you checked?

mine wont get very hot this time of year unless its been for a bit of a run and warmed through

blocked rad or stat not opening. as you have flushed the rad, i would say the stat could be your issue

yup just take out the thermostat and do a run til it reaches optimum temp. then take is for a hard run and see if thats the problem.
If problem persists then you have a blocked radiator.
But first check if your gasket is blown. to check it just start with the radiator cap off. wait till it warms and see if air bubbles keep coming out of the radiator. if its persistent then you have compression leaking into the waterline which means a blown gasket.

For all the price of a stat, there is no point in removing one, refilling the system to test and then draining and refilling again to fit a new one. It would cost more in lost coolant/antifreeze than the price of a stat. Could be well worth pouring some rad flush in there before you drain the system, let it do some work, then replace the stat and before refilling, take the bottom hose of the rad and use a garden hose to flush the rad out.

Stuck a new stat in the gt today and it seems to have sorted her out, temp gauge sits below half way and doesnt move...is that normal temp for the gt?

Also mate a complete f**k up when taking the two 10mm nuts of the housing, managed to break the head off one of them :( should be fun trying to get that out

Yeah, just slightly below halfway is the normal reading mate.

That housing is bolted to the side of the head so you can remove it and work at it on the bench if you need to (three 12mm's and whatever hoses removed). The studs should be readily available from Toyota (part number 92122-60616) and not too dear at all. If you need any further help just shout!

if you can get the rest of the stud out, then a normal bolt will do the job fine :)
with the thermostat housing off, is there any amount of stud still sticking out? if so you can get some grips on it and get the bugger out :)
