Playing around with HDR images - trial and lots of error!

gv1.3

Admin
Well I have been messing around with HDR images for a week now and finally starting to get some that I like.

Rather than taking multiple pictures with the camera on a tripod, which I did for a couple below I found that taking one picture in RAW format then changing the "exposure" in captureNX2 (nikon software) and using the different manipulated pics gives a sharper image. Even when using a tripod I found that it was very difficult not to get ghosting and artifacts in the finished image.

If anyone has any more tips on HDR images please feel free to share them :)

Pictures look amazing, can see what you mean by the ghosting effect, but regardless they came out great. Would almost expect to see a shot or two of those in a Nat Geo magazine.

Enjoying Florida then? Wish I was heading back this year, unfortunately my plans for Costa Rica have been scrapped, maybe it'll free up an extra $800 to do some traveling though.

Get some more pictures up, I like the break in topics.

great pics mate, ive done a few hdr photos but i've only ever used the tripod and taken 3or4 different photos, when you take yours in RAW - what attributes do you adjust? just exposure? how many pictures do you make from the one RAW file?

here's a couple of mine using HDR and tripod.

lol @ nat geo. Last time I bought a national geographic I sat there looking at the pics thinking "How on earth do they get these shots!!" man I would'nt even know where to start they are so amazing.

Loving Florida but its starting to heat up like it did last year and my poor Irish self is not able for it :(

How come you Costa Rica trip was scrapped?

One of my birthday presents was a trip to Gettysburg so will be in PA at some point.

I really want to try something thats a bit different looking, am sick of trees and beaches. I have an idea of a photo at a railroad yard Ive passed by a couple of times.

You see the pic you have of the tree is great but I found that if I take a pic of a tree that has leaves the leaves are moving in the wind and the different pics when combined come out slightly blurred.

If I take one RAW image I have only played with changing exposure so far, will be interesting how they turn out after I change some other attributes. I usually use 4 or 5 pics.

its a different style of photography Ricky and often the pics end up looking a bit weird and fake, the one of the Tampa skyline with the VW van for example.

The pics are achieved by taking multiple pics of the same thing using different settings on the camera resulting in several pics of the same thing that all look different. These pics are then combined and give a picture that has far more shadows etc than a typical picture.

The style suits SOME scenarios. The 3rd and 4th pictures I think really lend themselves to this style. Having said that I like how weird some of the pics turn out. The second pic Cornish just posted looks like something from a video game, I like it a lot.

Kool, I will give that a try next time! far easier if I don't have to lug my tripod around with me everywhere!

The picture of the wooden 'rickety' bridge looks brilliant btw

my thoughts exactly!! setting up the tripod and trying to be careful not to move it etc is a pain nevermind dragging it around!

Oh and thanks for the comment on the pic :)
