Rear main seal leak

Gee, it does sound like your rear main seal. I had it on my mine, until i had the gearbox recon'd. Had that seal replaced. When you say its on the drivers side, thats spot on to what i had mate.

OK mate thanks.

Does this leak engine or box fluid?

Checked gearbox oil today, was level so no leaking there.
The rear main seal, would engine oil leak out of this yes, nothing to do with gearbox oil?

rear crank seal will leak engine oil if it is worn....nothing to do with gear oil....all along the side of the engine by the gearbox plate and some of the surrounding area will be wet

if your oil dip stick is not secure and comes loose...u can expect the back of the engine on the drivers side to be wet.....its best to have it secure....as a lot of oil could come from that position...........

i think u just replaced the "Front" crank shaft seal right???..........

We checked the front crank seal and cam seal, both were bone dry.

Stupid question of the month:

If I remove the gearbox, clutch flywheel...I won't have an issue with having to fill up with more engine oil, because it will all be in the sump right?

I'm losing no gearbox oil, so it is coming from the engine somewhere. I swear if the f*cking dipstick! Gonna loko at that first before I blow more money.

the seal is damn big, thats why its £35. Yeah as Gee said yoiu can buy driveshaft seals no problems. They differ thought dependant if you have a oem lsd or not.

The seal fits in this housing:

I removed that bit to reseal the housing, if you do this you have to be v careful when removing the old sealer as its on the sump and could drop bits of sealer into the sump:

My oil droplets are on the opposite side....

Where were yours when you noticed you had the leak?

or u could have a slight leak around the sump gee

your mechanic will be best able to determine where your leak is coming from.....i really cant see that being a problem for him.......as we/members cant see your engine personally

by any chance are u using power steering fluid ??

Its not the sump, has it re sealed the other week.

Yes, I have power steering, but have checked the levels and they are fine. Its hard to find the leak, because the oil is blown all over the engine.

Before I book the car in guys in regards to this oil leak problem, just got one question.

I have checked the following:

Cam cover/breather
Front crank seal
Cam seal
Sump
Dipstick o-ring

The next checks will be:

Rear main seal
Driveshaft seals

The question is, what other seals could the oil leak be coming from if any? And what seals are best to be replaced when the gearbox is removed?

Guys,

How much would you pay to have the rear main oil seal changed?

Just been quoted £250 as it has to have the box/clutch/flywheel off. Still, seem a bit expensive from work I have done in the past..been charged £75-100 before to change a gearbox.

well m8, i got charged 150 for the rear main and both driveshaft seals. Buuuuuuuuuuuut, i have a feeling they caused the damage to the block so not sure how important that price is m8 ...

Not sorted this YET.

Dropped a spare block and TRD LSD off to be sorted, so when the new box goes in, I'll change the seals.

One thing..sometimes if your rear main seal leaks, your clutch will start to slip. Mine hasnt, but when setting off in 1st gear, I hear a little screetch like a wheel spin. Could this be the first signs?
