i have been recently dealing with RHD Japan.com and I keep shopping from them because I thought I would get way with custom charges as they all delivered on time, (unlike Royal Mail they tend to not deliver unless you clear all the outstanding balance)after 6 weeks I start getting hit by massive bills from fed ex tax office , I am not complaining about paying these charges, I am just trying to point out if anything goes wrong like wrong part or faulty part then it makes the situation awkward. in my case RHD japan just wasn't interested,

they charged me £44 for an uprated bearing and then sent me a toyota one, and to top it up i got £19 bill for vat import tax and administration fee.
this item is only £22 from local toyota dealer, which you can pick up in two days

That's one of the drawbacks about buying parts from overseas, you don't know if you will get stung for inport duty and for how much.

My Dad bought a load of fasteners from the states, the total goods came to about $60 (£30 ish). A letter then arrived to say that the items were on hold in a dock pending a tax/import duty of another £30.

usually a standing charge and 30% tax are charged because the item was siezed :(

Its rubbish, VAT will only be charged if you declare it, but how can you declare parcels?

Import charges are part and parcel of buying from overseas lads, it's something that should be expected - if you get away with it it's a bonus but always shop with them in mind. That way you are not hit with unexpected charges.

It's worth making sure when buying on here to ensure the parts you are buying are not subject to these extra costs. I've been hit unexpectedly too.

Good thread Mossy, Buyers be aware! :)

i was told by a fedex driver that they are looking out big time for parcels like this arriving and import taxing everything they can find!

though u can pay for gift wrapping on rhdjapan it doesnt gaurantee no import tax, its jus a risk u take!

I peronnaly prefer my parts to come from ems rather than fed ex!

postage to the uk seems to be cheaper than out of it so if you have a problem with something you bought from us/ japan its probably not worth sending back so effectively youre buying something with no guarantee. having been caught like this myself, i wouldnt do it again.

Unlucky.

I more or less always get charged when importing stuff from the US, but even with the chargers, things can still work out cheaper compared to UK prices.

I've bought loads of things from RHD and never, ever been charged custome charges. Not heard anything after months and months. I'll still keep shopping from there.

RHDjapan recently changed to fedex they are more likely to hit you with tax over ems/parcel force. Fedex charges are cheaper as they only charge £7.50 for working out the tax i think parcel force/ems is around £20 rip off.

it's hit and miss, really.

i got charged import tax, not a problem, i knew it was coming, so i payed it.

2 months later fedex issue me a bailif letter saying if i dont pay they ill seize my possessions. i phoned them and explained to them i had already payed it, and they said they will call off the bailiffs.

1 month later, the bailiffs (a third party firm) sent me a letter demanding payment within 3 days otherwise i was gonna get a visit.

i phoned them and explained to them they need to speak to fedex as the matter had already dealt with. so they did and now it seems ok.

and the ammount they were after was £7.56. all that for a measley £7.56, i mean seriously.

ive had a similar problem with an import tax bill. i paid it in cash at the bank and fed ex still kept sending me letters asking for the payment so i rang them and explained, gave them a few details and in a couple of days they sorted it out.

I think the duty is only paid on items over £18 UK sterling, you can always ask the seller (on auction sites anyway) to put value as being just under this - leave the invoice out of parcel - post that seperately/email it - BUT this won't work on new/high value items from traders of course.

Use USPS (not UPS!) from the states always cheapest postage. At least royal mail keep the goods safe until you collect and pay!

Admin charge was £16 extra on top of duty last time I did this.

Never been charged a penny, guess I may be just lucky. Although I have bought a lot of items from japan.
