snapped head stud

well poo'ed off

since putting the manifold off ive had a blow so thought id tighten it up a smidge.

i had the torque wrench on 40Nm and the bugger snapped!

1) how do i get that stud out?
2) where do i get replacement one?
3) what is the correct torque setting?

thanks

spray some wd40 or similar on it overnight and then attack with mole grips, or even normal pump pliers may do it if you have a good grip ;)

and where can i get a replacement stud?

Everyone relax - I'm here! :haha:

Should be able to nick one from a spare head here if you are stuck but the Toyota part number looks like 90116-10196. I've never ordered them before so best to order one in and let us know if I got it right.

Use a stud extractor - my set cost around £20 and have saved my bacon repeatedly. Well worth having about the garage!

You can buy studs at a local bolt and nut shop.
If you struggle to remove it then you can weld some ears/bumps on it to create extra grip and right after welding then try to loosen as the heat will help :)
You can also weld a nut to the stud so that you can use a socket on it.(hit it with a lot of amps! ~110A)
Usually when a stud broke like that it wont come out without a big fight :p

Mole grips are more for light work. I use it to hold plates together while welding them.

If that was mine, Id take the mani off then rethread the stud down to the head. Then wind on a nut then a washer then another nut. the start undoing the back nut until its tight on to the washer and locked against the other nut.. you'll be able to take out the stud. Then just get another stud from a spare head or off an exhaust shop :)

job done

Yes great idea but it does not look like the stud is long enough?

The mani flange looks pretty thick 13mm plus the 2mm of stud sticking out = 15mm. 1x 7mm thick nut with a 2mm washer gives you 6mm worth of thread to screw onto

or 3mm of thread if its a 10mm flange LOL

One things for sure it will or will not work :) all bases covered

sound so sorted this out using a stud extractor, tried moles and welding techniques but no joy.

problem i have now is sourcing another stud with the finer thread, Jay?

what is the correct torque setting as i had it on 40Nm last time and that sheared it?

Get one from Toyota, they are fine threads and also the stud has a non threaded part in the middle for the exhaust manifold to sit on.
