I'm with Kon on the wiring being a possible cause.

Remove the lower trim on the drivers side (the one where your knees are) and inspect the wiring behind it. If something has shorted out in there it can be slowly melting the insulation around the wires. Have a look and let us know if any of the wires, connectors or other components are showing signs of heat.

On my trackcar I had the same scenario where one of the looms had rubbed through and was arc'ing off the steering column. It melted my turbo timer loom before I realised what was happening.

I would not recommend driving the car until you get to the bottom of whatever it is causing the smoke and smell. A dash fire can be highly dangerous.

Or you could have stood in something but it sounds unlikely. ;)

Sound words Jay!

This is not something to be taken lightly.. it may not burn today or tomorrow, but if god forbid it does it could cause a disaster man!

pls be careful & check very thoroughly... im sorry but "i had a look" doesnt cut it as far as this problem goes.. if need be strip as much as u can from the dash & get to the bottom of the problem!

Im still intresed to know the "smell" of it.. you say its discusting.. cheezy smell? Puke smell? BBQ Smell? Wood burning? discribe it, what colour was the smoke also?

Been out to it this morning, left the battery disconnected overnight, it still smells :(

The smoke was grey, and the smell does resemble A/C refridgerant (i think), it's so hard to describe, but it gets right up your nose and you can't breath! And once you leave the car the smell lingers on your clothes.

Am I right in saying the A/C refridgerant enters a part of the heater matrix? If so is there a possibility some "left over" refridgerant could have escaped into the heater matrix and caused the problem?

A friend said he had this exact problem with his scooby, and he flushed out th coolant, re-filled and used rad-weld, and he said it cured it. I am tempted to do this as my heater isn't much good anyways

I wouldn't put rad weld near a car. It can cause it's own problems.

The aircon radiator that cools the cabin air is behind the glovebox. The aircon system is pressurised so when released the gas doesn't usually hang around. I can't see it being aircon gas TBH.

Remove the radio and check the wiring behind it for signs of damage, also check the wiring behind the glovebox as well.

The smell could be plastic melting which would explain the toxic smell.

remove the whole dash and search, i would say. my old alarm caught fire and the cables ran through the engine bay, all around the dashboard and up to the driver's side (left, that is). all the cables had become one! i'm very lucky nothing else caught fire.
