TD04 shaft play? vid added!

just recieved my turbo for the conversion and there seems to be a lot of shaft play.

there is a good 1mm side to side and about half a mm in and out. doesnt seem to be any oil leaking from it and the blades dont seem to have touched the sides of the housing.

how much shaft play do used TD04's normally have? never had another one to compare, i know this would be no good on a ct9.

thanks

hmmm. contacted him about sending it back as wasnt happy with it. i think if i keep it for another few months while i do the conversion he wont take it back.

not sure what to do as i dont want to waste my time fitting it if it is just going to die?????

will be a waste of time if i send it back and just end with one the same again!?!?!? i will get a vid of the movement and post it up once im back from work.

any more comments on this? if it is normal i may just try it and see, but obviously if not then i will get it sent back. will get that vid in a bit, just need to go get the turbo from work :)

would it be worth me rebuilding? can get a kit for £40 and i have done a ct9 before :)

I wouldnt worry about that as its a journal bearing so the oil gap is multiplied by the length of the shaft. The important one is that it does not move in and out to much, this shows real wear in the shaft.

I think it will be OK Dunc to be honest.

mine hs a little biot of movement mate, but no smoke or boost issues seems most td04s are like that from what im told!

:) but then again its one of them things, you ethier chance it or u dont lol

ok, think i will just try it and see. i have a little back and forth movement which is what im mostly worried about, but for the £80 delivered i paid and from what has been said i think i might chance it and just hope its ok.

More than 0.1mm is looking for trouble.
Some do run with 0.15mm but do not last at all.
If I am you I would take the turbo for inspection at your nearest turbo specialist.
If there is oil in the turbo then you should not be able to feel any linear play.

here is a video, not the best quality, but you get the point. the linear movement was hard to video. will have to borrow my girlfriends camera to try and get a better vid. whould you say this was acceptable or not? i dont think its good.

there doesnt seem to be alot of oil in it tbh, hard to tell.

Drop some oil in it, rotate the shaft to prime the bearing and check the play again. From what can be seen in the video, it doesn't look too good.
