Yep they have what's called a VEB (Volvo engine brake) it works on the exhaust valves basically it holds the valves closed so the back presure slows you down it's all run off the engine oil presure in the rocka shaft there are 2 rockas for the valves 1 that works the injector and the other is for the VEB its not that clear in the pick but the VEB rocka works on the exhaust one.

Interesting. The only system like that I've seen on trucks are exhaust brakes. You press a button and a flap that closes in the exhaust when you're off throttle, causing back pressure and slowing the truck down. It's crude compared to that VEB system.

Volvo still use something like that for the warm hold basically it plugs the exhaust so that the engine gets up to temp faster. The volvo VEB works on the same sort of idea of the JAKE brake which has been around avery long time at least from the 1960s I think Cummins came up with this idea.
