Tokyo Hotel recommendations/advice??

Hi guys,

Well my mrs surprised me today (my birthday) with a trip to Tokyo all booked for the Auto Salon in January 2010! Gonna be awesome. Bit scary the thought of organising the trip especially the hotel which we need to book.

I know a few guys on here have some experience there and wondered if there are any decent companies you can talk to that will know where the Makuhari Messe is as I want to book a hotel close by. Found one or two on Expedia, hotels.com etc but would like to speak to someone in person, its too much money to risk otherwise! Will a normal high street travel agent be able to find a hotel in the vicinity do you think?

What kind of hotel are you looking for? And don't worry about proximity, that's what the subway and rail's for... ;)

Yeah I was going to say you don't need to stay close as your never far from the subway anywhere in tokyo!

I can't give any advice on hotels in Tokyo though as I stayed in a youth hostel there and it was a crap one, however the hostels can be good if you want somewhere cheap, the one I stayed at in Kyoto was basically a hotel with nice rooms and a bar etc

Thanks guys - doesnt need to be amazing but clean and tidy. The ones I was looking at were 3 star one was 4 star on Expedia. Only reason I thought close was better was because I didnt know if we would be able to fathom the trains being in another language/alphabet. Suppose £100ish a night somewhere clean and tidy is the only pre requisites!

Their all in english too in tokyo, its really easy to work out.;) Well all the main stations are in english, some of the outer one's sometimes aren't but you probably won't be going there.

The first time you see the huge spaghetti junction network of subway lines it is a bit daunting though.....

Nah, it's easy!!! :p

Anyway... Best hotel I could recommend for you is the Toyoko Inn in Chiba. Here's a link: http://www.toyoko-inn.com/e_hotel/00005/index.html. This hotel chain is very well set-up, and is modelled on western style rooms with Japanese style convenience (in other words, compact and well thought out). The room will set you back less than £50.00 per night, and isn't too far from the venue (about 2.5 miles or so). You can reserve rooms via the website, and having stayed in 3 different ones in Nara, Himeji and Yokohama, they're ideal. If you fancy staying elsewhere, they're all over the place, so don't feel you have to stay there for the duration. They have a free breakfast in the morning (go on, try it, I dare you!!!), plus vending machines stacked full of cold 'flaming cow' and free internet access in the foyer. They usually have 2 english films on the go too, but trust me, you WILL get bored of watching them... :p

The only other place I'd recommend is K's House, which is a hostel in Asakusa (nice to visit as there's a good temple there). I haven't stayed in the one in Asakusa, but have stayed in their hostels in Kawaguchiko and Hakuba, and they're excellent. Here's a link: http://kshouse.jp/tokyo-e/

Tokyo's so vast that you'll be travelling a lot, so don't try and go central, just try and go somewhere near to the subway or rail as you can get anywhere fast (and cheaply).

If you need any ideas on what/where to go, let me know...

Not much point making this a sticky whilst JGT, Wallace and I are around mate. We should be able to add enough info to make life easier... As for places in Tokyo, there's soo many to go too, from Akihabara (electronic shops), Roppongi Hills (posh shops, restaurants etc), the tree lined shops of Omotsando where ALL the BIG brands (Prada, Gucci, Joseph etc) are waiting to steal your wallet, the madness of Shibuya and the skyscraper district of Shinjuku. Add this to the Imperial Palace Gardens, various temples, fish markets, Tokyo Tower etc etc etc, and you'll get the idea. That's without even mentioning Disney, and the car related attractions...

Best bet, buy yourself a Rough Guide (better IMO that Lonely Planet), and have a read. That way, you won't miss out.

Well rural china is a lot harder than Japan when you only speak a handfull of words (badly) in chinese and can't read it.:p

It was a K's house I stayed at in Kyoto and the one there was great as I mentioned above, I stayed there for 2 weeks and loved it (mainly because of the bar and plum wine....).

Take a look at some of my photos from there for inspiration:

If I remember I'll update that thread with info on the photos from japan.;)

I remember arriving in Beijing after a 28-hour train ride from Hong Kong... I think Mars would be less intimidating! Millions of people milling around, being stared at constantly, avoiding the hock and loogies, nothing in English, no English spoken, no idea which way to go...

I'd go back tomorrow like a shot though... ;)

No worries bud, fire away with the questions... Don't be scared, you won't come to any harm out there. As long as you can point, you'll get around, and if you're not brave, eat in McDonalds! It's a fantastic place, and I can't wait to go back for a 3rd time...
