TRD 1.5way LSD

people seem to claim that the quaife is quiet..........but i've seen different---maybe it's the oil used,,,,,,,,but it was a bit noisey......the guy decided to sell it----and this is the one for the ep82/91/corrolla/levin

i think i'll go trd 1.5 helical...........very shortly......lol

ive been in my mates ep82 with a quaiffe diff and it was quiet. my stock diff wines alot but his is fine.

when installing an lsd its not quite as simple as just boshing it in is it?

thought you had to set the float on it and everything? not entirely sure, just asking!?

i dont personally have experience with them.....but some need load adjustments.....usually the clutch ones from what i've heard

glad to hear the quaife was quiet...........maybe something was wrong with his----as i was going to buy it.....but could not understand why it was making noise........when people always said it was suppose to be quiet

people say quaife is the god of lsd..........but i'll be getting a new TRD LSD helical for about US$600 from my toyota dealer.........so i'll be going with that....lol

is the quaife helical or mechanical......i assume helical........but not sure

also,. hardcore, do u have any expereince with the quaife and/or trd units........

i was advised by about 3 knowledgeable persons to get the TRD helical........for my purposes.....as its easy for maintenance and works well (1.5) for street set ups......what do u say

The quaife is a helical it just works differently. I've never seen on in a starlet, but the VW guys I know, love them.

The TRD helical is a factory item. This is what I have. The TRD mechanical is an old type and has been replaced by the clutch type for a while now.

adam-glanza.........from speaking to people who actually use these different units........i'm getting the impressions there is NO single best LSD---kind of like how there is NO best turbo

seems like it largely depends on application/use and your requirements.........seems like the helical is better for everyday use (less/no noise, easy maintenance, etc)........while the clutch type is preferred for track/circuit as it tends to offer more adjustability (1 way, 1.5 way, 2 way) and can be more aggressive if needed, also where noise may not be a concern

for everyday use we seem to have choices of CUSCO, Quaife, TRD, Kaaz, etc..........seems like quaife and TRD are preferred by most i've spoken to

gorganl2000, you said your getting one for 600 us from the dealer? that seems a bit pricey as i bought my TRD helical off ebay for 450 with bearings and speedo gear, shipping was only about 40 bucks... the guy who sells them gets them all the time, he even sells the Quaiffe for around 600... thats if your into buying on ebay.

so what is best? helical or clutch etc

what does the clutch do and the helical doesnt etc?
Depends on your application. Mechanical and Viscous are the worst. Mechanicals are harsh and have fixed pre-loads. There are cases of people breaking their wrists from the LSD kickback. Mechanicals are just a step above a welded diff. I had one in my Suzuki Swift GTi, not for road use. Viscous can overheat reducing it back to one-wheel drive. Nissan SE-R owners can attest to this.

Helicals bridge the gap between street and race, but have fixed pre-loads as well. They are the next smoothest in operation to the Viscous.

Clutch types are for professionals and are usually left to such. They have to be setup properly for maximum effect which is their strength. They also can be easily repaired/refreshed. The most common mistake is just putting them in without adjusting the pre-load plates.

Well, his is new, your's would be used.

yeah...i suspect his LSDs are used.........US400 is a bit low for a new trd lsd based on my MANY searches

can u find out if his LSD are used or new?

Hmm..interesting.

I maybe be rebuilding my gearbox and want to put a LSD in at the same time. It appears for my application, which would be fast road use and some QTR and circuit work a few times a year, a TRD 1.5 helical is the way to go? I know QUAIFE are meant to be really good, but I dont want to folk out £600 for one.

So, a TRD 1.5 Helical will help with traction on set off due to putting the power through both wheels rather that one spinning up more than the other (torque steer?)?

How do they work exactly under braking? What are the advantages?

when fitting one of these do you have to change the driveshafts too, or will the originals fit?

reason i ask is if you have a factory lsd equipped gearbox, the driveshafts are different.

No mate they fit non lsd drivershafts, you can't put a aftermarket lsd in a factory lsd box because of the difference in driveshafts.
