Hey guys, was logging on to my usual starlet sites. Is UkStarletClub down again???
Apparently Socks took over it? And it went down hill from there.Looks like UKSO is offline at the minute, they are usually quite tech-savvy so hopefully back up soonish.
UKSC never recovered from the 'hack' I'm afraid. Just noticed the domain name is available if anyone is brave enough!
Could never get a straight answer to questions then the admin went awol when folks where having issuesApparently Socks took over it? And it went down hill from there.
gave this a read, it seems from what jay said, coincidences happen, so do coup's.Just came across this thread https://www.toyotagtturbo.com/community/index.php?threads/about-uksc.104375/
I don't remember any of that stuff happening, reading through the thread it is absolutely outrageous what happened there. There are people posting in that thread who don't seem to think there is anything wrong with theft of a database... what a completely disgusting thing to do. I wouldn't have been getting a solicitor involved I would have been getting the police involved as it was blatant theft.
The thread is a really interesting read all these years later. I got a giggle from someone asking "do people make money from running a forum?". The staff are and always have been volunteers and donations/membership fees covered the cost of hosting a couple of times but in the end were more hassle to manage than they were worth so we stopped those. The forum is kept online because there is a huge amount of information here and it has zero sources of income.
In relation to the database corruption or other issues that led to the demise of UKSC... we have had our challenges over the years too. We have had database corruption issues and have also even had the front page of the site hacked at one point, these things happen. Having the ability to recover from incidents like this through regular backups is very important. Over the years this has gotten much easier. Cloud hosting providers offer full snapshotting of server instances that you can recover from within a few minutes whereas some of the backup processes we were using in the past were a complete pain to manage and recover from if needed.
Social media has all but killed interactive forums but as an information resource they are really hard to beat. May people have now left social media or have never had an interest in using it and some of the old forums and other chat and communications systems that went out of fashion are seeing somewhat of a revival.
This had me thinking recently.... I wonder what a forum like this could be again if we put some time in to it. Who knows.
I abandoned my threads on there because it was deadI've a build thread on there I've not updated for a while I really should but tbh I don't think anybody reads it I've found loads of potential areas of concern for rust
Il share them on here as it seems pretty active had some major bodywork done as it seems a shame not to share it
