welding compressor housing???

just an idea instead of making a bracket, welding on a boss or 2 with a thread to fix the actuator?

im not 100% sure on the properties of cast aluminium. will it warp at all???

more like you will weld a hole right through it.. :p
i wouldn't try it, but that's just me.. :)

Im pretty sure it can be done, the guy i used to work for a few years ago could weld it but I'd bring it to an engineering specialist and ask them, they'd know and have the equipment to do it

hey dac..
can be done without issue mate. you dont need anything special to weld anything on to a compressor housing.

i wasnt going to do it myself. i have a mate at an engineering company across the road who has done some aluminium welding before. just wanted peoples opinions on welding the compressor housing before i went and did it.

will get the angle sorted and the lines made up and then i will see about getitng it done. dont have an AC tig set at my work as we rarely do ali welding.

thanks

If he can weld aluminium then it should be fine - however welding cast aluminium is not as nice as welding bar/plate due to the pores, it normally isn't as neat.

yeah, cant actually remember what he welded for me before, but it was quite a big old weld and wasnt super neat. as long as it does the job it should be fine.

just make sure the component is CLEAN before you weld it and maybe warm it up before you weld
the cleaner the place of welding the better the weld (aluminium does not like dirt)

i have welded on compressor housings before its no different to welding on a cam cover

I cant see the point really, making a bracket is easier to do, easier to replace and modify and less terminal if anything goes wrong.

now weeJohn sounds like a wise man.. :p but again, i respect the fact that for some, turbos are like paper plates, they use them rather 'differently' and butchering one with such mods would not be anything to cry about.. :D

cant be any easier than getting someone else to do it for free ;)

plus the position of my housing makes the bracket an absolute beast as it is 180 degrees out from where it originally was.

yeah dac69er,,,,it can be welded for sure...just make sure its done properly and with a suitable piece of metal as the base for the actuator
it needs to be thick and sturdy enough so it does not flex when the actuator arm moves
