im getting a tapping, rattling noise from the gearbox, there in no problem changing gear and everything is smooth, once clucth is engaged the rattle and tapping noise goes, but it is causing the main pulley to wobble slighty(only a fraction),nothing major, and told by a mechanic its alright and he thinks it is the bearings, but if it was the bearings it should effect gear changing in gearbox, i only had the clucth changed 8 weeks o.k and the the rattle and tapping noise started a few weeks later,do you reckon it could be the fly wheel or the gearbox

Hey mate, cheers for the PM, internal problems with the gearbox would usually transmit themselves as gear selection issues. It's pretty hard to diagnose this sort of issue via the web but drain some of your transmission fluid and check for any metal filings. Might give you a heads up on a dying box. From your description it sounds unlikely - sounds more clutch related?

If clutch operation is eliminating the noise it could be release bearing or clutch related. The way you mention a wobble in the pulley makes me worry. That doesn't sound healthy.

Unfortunately it will take the removal of the gearbox and a look inside the bell housing to assess what might be happening in there. Inspect the flywheel and securing bolts while you are down there too. I'm hoping it's clutch related.

Let us know what you find mate.

jay would it be possible that something like the clutch or fly wheel is coming lose, causing vibration accross the crank, because if it is clutch related your man who fit the clutch will have to sort it for me,i did'nt replace fly when i did clutch ,which i probably should have, there is very little movement on the pulley, barley noticible ,these problems only occured a few weeks after the new clutch was installed, and i have no problem shifting gears

im 100% positive that ur problem is the thrust bearing.. ;)

it rattles when idle, then when u press the clutch the rattling noise goes..

change the thrust & release bearing & ull notice it will go away :)

the tapping noise appears to be coming from were the slave cylinder joins the fork from the gear box,is this the trust bearing Kon ,the realise bearing is only 8 weeks old, would it be possible it went this fast, these problem only occured 3 weeks after clutch was changed, thats why im thinking it not the gearbox

the thrust bearing is exactly @ the centre of the flywheel (position wise).. so technically yes u should hear it come from under the slave cylinder ;)

i would go for a faulty release bearing when it goes away it is obviously hard up against the clutch fingers, is there any sort of vibration through the pedal? if so you u need another clutch cover

I have the same problem...and this is worrying me as I've kept my 5efhe gearbox, and I got my old Crank Pulley back and it was all chipped

if you are wanting to change the flywhheel i suggest a lightened and balanced one you might as well as its out anyway, and a mechanic is perfect for the job. gearbox specialists usually only strip repair and rebuild, recondition or renew boxes for you. im a mechanic myself have been for the last 4 years and have changed hundreds of clutches flywheels etc its easy if you know how

there is no vibration in clutch pedal, just the rattling ,tapping noise, which is loud enough,as said the clutch was replaced 8 weeks ago,and has a brand new realease bearing, what do you think about what Kon said,do you think it could be the trust bearing rather then the realise bearing, and is this easy to replace .if i am to replace the trust bearing ,should i do the flywheel aswell

im 99% sure that sounds like thrust bearing mate, same thing happened on my mates evo when he fitted new clutch..

i would agree with Kon

They are talking about the same thing.

are you 100% they are the same thing, just from Kons post i thought he was talking about 2 different bearings, trust and realise,

do you think the mechanic that installed the new clutch, did it wrong then, and should he fix it for free, with the clutch only been 8 weeks old ,do you think it was installed wrong, and i just need to get it refitted correctly or will i need a new bearing when gearbox is of

It could have gone faulty for many reasons, I couldn't say to be honest. Fit a new one, it's not expensive - just a few hours labour :)
