What suspension set-up should i use?

Hi all

On my Starlet the suspension is completely standard and i find the ride very soft and it handles a bit like a boat when changing direction quickly (perhaps a bit harsh to describe it). I was thinking of just lowering it on Tein springs (-40mm) but also thought about different shocks and springs. I have had a look on the parts forum and i have got plenty of choice, just need some advice

Thanks Mike

i found the tein springs very good on standard dampers mate.
you could always try them first then upgrade to uprated/adjustable dampers at a later date.

i might have to do this aswell because mines on standards an it feels the same

i didnt find the standard suspension setup too bad tbh. my other GT came lowered and have had 2 sets of coilovers on it and compared to them i didnt think stock suspension felt as bad as some make out.

the teins are very good though if you dont want to go silly low or anything

coilovers arent always the best way to improve handling.

think long and carefully about what you choose.

there is a lot to choose from and i will do my best to help you out.

the standard shocks are oil filled, which were ok in the 90's, but are crap by todays standards with gas filled shocks.

1 option is : New KYB gas filled shocks and tein lowering springs, these will lower the car by 35-40 mm and these kyb shocks dont mind being lowered to much either. give a nice soft ride still, but the handling is 100 times better. (you dont have to choose tein springs there are other options like rs*r. avoid the cheap make ones though)

option 2: Tein (or other decent branded springs) and koni adjustable shocks. the koni front shocks are inserts and require you front suspension to be taken apart and these new inserts fitted, the rears are complete units. the joy with these are you can adjust these to suit your needs and find what you feel is the most suited to your driving style.

option 3: buy a set of used uprated shocks that have come from the land of the rising sun. these tend to be very stiff and almost as stiff as a lot of coilovers out there, also they are second hand and no one can be sure on how old they are, so they might last 5 mins or 5 years.

option 4: buy TEIN SUPER STREET coilovers these are pretty much the softest coilovers you can buy, and apparently i have read there great for road use and occasional track use. these are expensive.

option 5: buy any coilover you want but be careful as some can be very stiff. although recently i have heard very good things about the new bc racing coilovers recently, and there very cheap as far as coilovers are concerned.

if you do a search you should be able to read up on all types of coilovers and what people think of them, as this has been covered a few times.

i hope this has helped you.

yup coilys are shite on anything but perfect smooth roads/track in my opnion...on our roads they throw you around too much imo..

if you want a decent handling road car...RS*R Ti springs on KYB SR shocks is a very good combo.

also with all the supporting mods like panhard rods, strut braces, roll cages, antilift kits etc etc makes your car handles well :)

Not really, any decent coilies are fine for Uk roads.. I live in the middle of nowhere and most of the roads havnt been tarmac'ed for 20 years :p

People expect coilovers to be soft as fook :homer:

yea,my statement was a bit..er shite..

from my experience, fishy's tein hr's couldnt drive down a country road without throwing you around dangerously..if you tried to do it at any sort of speed you'd be dead...from being thrown into the bank when you hit any sort of bump

suppose its which model you have and your spring rates etc.
