Zen is right it allows you to move the selector while the ignition is turned off

Put your keys ion the ingnition (dont turn it on).
Then press the button, while holding the button in you can put the car in Lower gear without having to start the car.
It helps if your want to replace the radio etc and need some extra space.

Its also for towing purposes. If the cars front wheels are going to be on the ground whilst being towed, you put the box into N.
