My Dad had a white SR from new and I loved it, so when I passed my test I wanted a Starlet

Ended up getting a 5 door Starlet S, but was still fun all the same

A few years back when I was 17 driving around in my wee 1.2 corsa, there was a silver ep91 about my town with a carbon bonnet and black te37s. It was the only one in the town at this stage. I remember seeing it for the first time and thinking ''I will have one of those one day, when insurance lets me''. :)

My love affair started way back before I could drive. Was looking for a small engined car, cheap to insure as you do as a young driver. Came across the Starlet SR and I loved the look. Unfortunately, most were just out of my price range so I ended up with a 96 Corsa.

Got invited to stay round at my friends house while his parents went on Holiday one summer and it was right across from a small car sales garage. They had this small little black car with black and red wheels and quadlights and a little GT badge in the middle. I knew a bit about cars before but had never laid my eyes on one of these things before, what the hell was it?

I searched for ages trying to find out what it was and eventually found out it was the GT Turbo and there was a newer version called the 'Glanza'. These things look awesome! Driving home from my friends house late one night, and a dark coloured GT rumbles past me on the A666. Next day I'm in the bank begging for a loan :haha:

I was looking for a replacment for my 94 corsa as it was to be fair a bit of a shitbox and was my learner car, one of the lads in work was selling a white 97 Glanza and was forever trying to convince me to buy it. so i said take me for a spin in it. i loved it. but he was looking for 11K for it at the time i said maby but i wanted a black one. i checked around at the prices and found out the going rate for a 98 one was 10K.

So i scowered the internet and found one i liked, it ended up being in performancemotorworks in Naas so i said i'd go up and have a look at it, but to my dispear half way on the way up i got a phone call, it was sold. he said he had another in stock he just collected that morning from the docks, but it was white so i said i may aswell have a look at it as i was nearly there, so i arrived up and took it for a spin. I loved it. so as soon as i arrived back i agreed on a price and paid a deposit. then he asked if i wanted a look over it. it turned out he didn't even have the time to look over it befour i arrived so we put it up on the lift and he spotted a load of stuff he had missed the first time around and tried to go back on the price, but i had allready signed for it :p

I had a bit of bother with the bank and i didn't get to collect it for another 3 weeks, turns out he could have sold it 5 times in between that time for 2K more than i paid. i arrived up collected it and drove away with a big smile on my face, ( well until 2 miles down the road when i ran out of petrol :p )

Thought it would be interesting to hear a few fresh opinions..

Let's hear what EP started it for you!

Well my love affair started from the first time i saw the EP. My mate owned the EP before me so i always knew its history, work done and time spent. Spent time in the passenger seat and just knew it was ment to be. Back then they were start uber rare and alot of folk didnt actually know what it was! Was told all the storys about how it did on the 1/4 mile at Crail and i thought ... surely not?!

He told me about the forums and i joined up and was more of a spectator to start off with. Spent many hours in the technical section reading up and gathering information on problems and the solutions.

There was nothing i hated about it, my mate let me know he was selling up and i quickly sold my Corsa and moved in for the purchase. Bought her in bad affairs as the turbo was smoking but it was the best car to this day ive ever bought. Converted my old man and now he looks out for EP's and actually wants an EP82 for himself !

At the time I was running around in a '89 Scirocco GT2. It served it's purpose well, was reliable, fairly tidy and gave good miles per gallon. Until one summers evening I was pottering up the inside lane of the motorway, when out of the corner of my right eye I noticed a white car crawling past me in the middle lane. As I glanced over I noticed the white car was in fact a white Scirocco GT, travelling in the Scirocco were a couple with hair equally as white as the car and must of been in their late 60's. I then noticed the elderly lady in the passenger seat was actually giving me an acknowledgeable wild grin and frantic wave which was obviously because I was also driving a Scirocco. As the white Scirocco continued to pass me I then spotted the 'Scirocco Register' sticker in the back window. It was at that point I felt the drastic need for a quick change of vehicle.

I originally went on the hunt for another AE92 Corolla GTi (after owning several of them I would still to this day part exchange several of my limbs and organs for a tidy example), but after travelling around and looking at quite a few I gave up on the idea of finding a good one. This led me to investigate what other Toyota models built around the same era could have a similar appeal. It was then I stumbled across a white EP82 GT on Ebay of all places. It had landed in the UK a few months previous, but the guy who had imported it had found himself to be an expecting Dad between the time of buying the car in Japan and it arriving in the UK. With a Starlet GT not being the most ideal car for a family with a new born child, he'd gone out and bought a more suitable 5 door hatch back in the form of a Vauxhall Vectra, leaving the GT sat on his driveway unregistered and looking rather sorry for itself. It'd only been registered 5 days before advertising, so had 12 months MOT and 6 months tax and was ready to drive away. I'd no previous experience with a Starlet GT, but it seemed to tick all the boxes that suited my needs, so I picked up the phone and called the number in the advert. After a short chat with the guy, I found myself with one of those definitive gut feelings and within an hour I was on my way to take a look, carrying enough cash to drive it away.

The car had not recently been cleaned, so the 040 white paint was more of an off white shade of beige, but all the body panels lined up and appeared free of any major dents, chips or scratches. The contents of the engine bay was completely stock with the exception of a HKS SQV and there were no fluid leaks. All the paperwork was in good order and in general it was a sound and solid car, so off we went for the test drive. After experiencing the grin factor of the little 1.3 from a few 2nd through 3rd gear pulls, needless to say within a few hours I was back home as a proud owner of a low mileage '93 Mk2 GT. :D

Well, this all started when i was on my way to school one day. was cycling along the road and i heard this, whaaaam, Phsst. i thought to my self sounds like a nice Evo. i truned round to see this black small car, i was like wth? i have never seen one of these. i was puzzled for months intill was i was on my way to my friends house and seen the car parked up. i went over to it and saw the badge, "Glanza V". and fom that point onwards i set my hart on having one.

i worked in a pub from i was 16, and there was one of the locals who drove a 96 glanza in white, full lip kit, white 5spoke advans with blue lip and an hks exhaust. it looked the rod, and i wanted one. so worked for a shit wage, bought 99 glanza, had to get a refund (after 6months of waiting) as seller couldnt put it on the road due to sva, legal insurance cover no longer available so drove various french shit and got a gt last year - FINALLY lol.

This one lol,

I was dead set on getting a mk5 gt tdi golf, had been for months. Mean while ed had been continually saying how great his GT was and how my golf would never be as quick etc etc :haha:

I was like, I don't care the golf is just what I want, it looks class :argue:

Then one sunday Ed finally had his on the road and arrived up at my house and took me for a spin lol by the end all I wanted was a GT and couldn't rave about them enough.

4 months later it rolled of the boat and I had broke my bloody collar bone playing rugby so I couldn't drive it!!

I had bought seats for it before I had even got the car itself lol

I first looked at Glanza's when I was 19 when i brought a copy of banzai and saw the potentials. Ended up with a GT which i loved even more as I looked at a very dodgy Glanza that was wrecked and the GT was advertised in Auto trader just round the corner from the Glanza looked at it fell in love instantly and parted with £3100 there and then!

Must say if i was to get one again I would always get a EP82

I first saw one in a magazine when I was about 15, some lad had a lime green one in max power or something stupid like that. He was from down south somewhere.....

I read the article and hated the body mods etc and the colour of the car, but I liked how it sat, looked like a menacing little car...

So I turned 16 not long after, and decided that even if i couldn't drive one, I wanted one. So laid up in hospital for 9 weeks I was scanning the ads for free (and just about anything else I could find to occupy my time), and saw and ad stating "Starlet turbo, needs tlc £1250, this was 2001/2 so from hospital I gave my mum my bank card, and told her to raid the account.

Feeling sorry for me in hospital, she agreed that I could keep a car and work on it till I got my driving test etc,

So a phone call to the owner, arranged for my mum and uncle to go look at it, and low and behold my uncle got it for £650, got it as far as my house and the headgasket went....

Ever the optimist, I couldnt wait to get home from hospital to see it and take it apart....

So i did, then I hooked up with Jay, Trev and the old schoolers and Starlets have been in my life ever since......

heres my first GT

My starlet story started way back when i was about 13/14 when me and my dad were looking for evo 6's on a import site for himself and came across an add saying 'Glanza 1.3 Turbo'? Eh? whats that then? had a look and it was a standard silver 96 spec. I kinda thought naa not sure on that but soon started doing some more research on the little things and Id seen a few pics off a modified one which was marks Glanza at the time..

i instantly knew i wanted one! loved the look off it more than anything and how rare the car was. I bought a Starlet SR when i was 16 and is now a full glanza replica. So yeah Marks glanza was the decider for me and the best thing about it all is I got a ride in the exact car last year. Cannot say how amazing it felt to see and feel the power off the car that started it all off for me and was also my 1st ride in a starlet turbo. Totally hooked on the little things now. :)

Awesome story! What year was it? What mileage was on the car? And what mods did the miss?

Jay - my story will be later on as I plan to put some pics first.
