inlet side of the block???? or are you talking about the head?

doesnt matter what side, it would have had a cooling system issue and overheated, hence why the original gasket failed i would imagine, or a result of.

If somebody's prepared to come up with £4k, I'll let it go :)

If they don't, it'll be a garage queen for another year :D

Just like everything else, I'd imagine, Ragz.

I've got a spare to try, but I think it's the plug tbh.

Will report!

had a look at it today it seems his knock sensor wire had split before and was soldered back together

took it all off n soldered another one to it as the previous one had a messed up clip, but still no joy

also i know its off topic but what would cause a car to switch off when stationary, drive perfect but come to some traffic lights and its cut out

tried idle control valve and map sensor

thanx in advance n sorry to invade your thread

TPS settings, had this exact issue with a Pontiac Trans-Am V8, the voltage was out and stalled it at the lights.

Got 12 & 52 fault codes, both relating to engine rpm signals.

52 is the knock sensor.
12 is the ECU not receiving an RPM signal.

Just me that thinks that this will be the same fault?

If so, any hints?

Have you reset the ECU and checked if the codes have reappeared?

If code 12 was an active fault then it's likely the engine wouldn't run or just start up and then cut out. The ECU should cut the ground to the fuel pump relay when it doesn't receive the Ne (engine RPM) signal from the distributor.

Code 52 is an open or short in the knock sensor circuit.

It sounds like the ignition had been switched on when a few connectors were not connected.

I cranked it over with the distributer disconnected to build oil pressure, I then connected it and fired the engine for the first time.

What happens though, is that the engine light remains off until you blip the throttle to about 3k.
