im building a 5efte and using a t3/t4 turbo on it .. goal of 300whp....

the purpose is to have the car running in the 12s bracket on toyo RA1s

im thinking of installing a 4age 5 speed Gear box.

im hoping that the close ratios will keep the engine revs in the 'sweet spot'
thus using the best part of the power band..

has anyone tried this box on the starlet ?

your thoughts are welcome with regards to the pros and cons of this install. thanks:cool:

A gearbox from a 4age isn't a bolt on swap, the bellhousing bolt pattern is different. They also have an additional mount. There are also a number of different 5 speeds with various final drives.

It is possible and has been done before with good success but it's not quite so easy. Pretty much need to take the contents of the C52 or C56 4age box and put them into a starlet casing.

Ideally you want a C56 from an AE101 or AE111 Levin or Trueno, these have the most aggressive final drive and better 3rd and 4th gear ratios.

as fatman said the a series gearboxes are not fully interchangeable with the e series.. however u can get a much closer box ratio from the corolla g6, even though its an a series, u can just swop bellhousings over & have a very close 5 spd gbox.. im not sure if u can modify the linkages to be able to use the 6spd as well..

if u want to know more about this gbox speak to "hardcoreep" he had documented this swap to the last detail.

4age gearbox is definitely not the way to go. However, a gear box from the 4agze would be something worth looking into as the it can handle 400+HP. The stock gearbox should be okay, since the car is FWD you will no doubt have some amount of power delivery issue that would keep you tranny from exploding. Honestly, at 300HP your gearbox would be the least of your worries. There are tons of other factors that would keep you from unleashing all that power. Brakes, suspension, engine mounts(to contain that much torque), etc.

On a side note, the 4age NA tranny is slightly shorter than the 5e tranny. Cruising speed of 65MPH close to 4K RPM. That's alot of unnecessary revving just to get to work.

If you take the gearbox from a G6 corolla you need to use the drive cups aswell, the splines are different to the Starlet ones, It fits straight in but ya need to do a bid of dicking about, changing the inner boot etc, for the bigger outter diameter on the G6 Cup. Ive one in my Glanza, it makes a brave difference for 3rd and 4th.

For the linkages all you need to do is cut the side out of the housing for the gear stick and its done, just keep checking every so often to see if you can link reverse yet.

I can take a pic of mine for you if you want
