Hi Guys

I know this is a technical question but as its not a Starlet related question i thought I would post it in here.

Since selling the Glanza I have been driving a 2003 BMW e46 320ci.

I was driving it today and the oil level warning light came on.
I pulled over and checked the dipstick.
Oil level nearly off the bottom of the stick.
Hmm. Not good. So topped it up.

Thing is... 5 weeks ago I paid for the highest level BMW service. An inspection 2.
They changed the oil and filter etc and nothing additional was advised with regard to oil.
I cant find any leaks anywhere on the car. No drips under the car or on the engine tray etc...

I cant see any blue smoke out the back when driving either.

So where is the oil going?
The car has used nearly 4 litres in 5 weeks. Thats defo no right. Lol.

those engines like to burn oil.

bmw have probably used a fully synthetic 5w30, and used an engine flush, this is correct to application but as they get older and more mileage they start to drink more of it, and if they have used a flush (all main dealers love to for some reason) it might have got rid of the deposits left behind from the past that was stopping it from using oil. we get a fair ammount of bmw owners in buying top up oils from us.

you could try putting a thicker oil in,

a good qaulity 10w40 or 5w40 and see if that helps

Thanks for the replies guys.
I phoned the dealer to see what they did and they said exactly as sx said.

I've bought some slightly thicker oil and topped it up.
I'll keep an eye on it.

Cheers.

that's pretty poor. thought bmw engines were meant to be good?

Used to be in 80s... A friend of mine was a BMW qualified electrician for 7 years. He told me many stories you'd never believe. The cars are seriously unreliable compared to the Japanese ones. They actually build them to develop a fault over time and they charge a fortune for the spare parts and do everything possible that only the Dealership can sort the problem out.

He owns a BMW himself, but said to me only because he knows how to fix them himself -)

What he said the more optional extras you get the more trouble you will have especially in the cold weather.

I knew audis were a bit like that, but I am surprised about beemers.
I reckon 90% of the audis on the road are being driven around with an engine warning light on.
