Right, I've read a LOT of posts about blue smoke and the causes. I have the same problem, so trying to find out the most likely cause. I have a 4EFTE with a 5E top end. Now, the valve stem seals were done in 2007 and the car hasn't done much mileage since then (although a previous owner could have thrashed it for all I know). The turbo has just had a full rebuild with new bearings (not sure about the seals cos' I bought the kit myself and don't know what the seals actually look like (pics anyone?). A colleague at work who knows turbos rebuilt it for me.
There are 3 main thought processes:
1. Turbo seals
2. Valve stem seals
3. Piston rings
Not to sound condescending or anything, but a simple way of checking the general condition of the engine is to look at the condition of the spark plugs. Tan colour is about right, whitish deposits are a sign of rings/valve seals. Mine are all tannish in colour, with some grey tinges on the ground electrode (all seems fine), but I'm getting quite a lot of blue smoke, especially after boost. I had the turbo rebuilt because of oil in the intercooler/pipes, this is still happening now, so I'm a bit confused.
Just hope it's only the turbo still.
