Hey guys,

Was driving my car last nite to get some dinenr, and all of a sudden srated to chud and then died, lost brakes, power steering everything etc, so pulled over and tried starign her again, she turns over, allthough sounds as though she is struggling and engine sounds like it wants to kick in but doesnt quite get there.

checked fuel and car has fuel. noticed when turning over black smoke is coming out of exhaust??

any ideas?

yh will do, nice one.

some one at work today said it may be the timing belt? :s bloody hope not, although doing a bit of reading it should only be a belt change because the 4efte engines are non-interfernece ones or somthing?

that's true, inless it's had a lot of skimming done in the past (I was also told if you keep turning the engine over when the belts gone you can bend valves? don't know how true that is though.)

i got something similar to this ones. Then the ecu ground wire (screw was loose) on the intake manifold. Nothing worked anymore, later it started again and drivin normal.

If the engine is struggling to start then it wont be timing belt related. if the timing belt brakes often most often the valves on at least two of the cylinders will remain open so there will be no compression and the engine will offer no resistance to the starter motor and it will turn over much faster than normal.

you say it has fuel, does it have the correct fuel? you or someone else hasnt accidentally put diesel in the tank?

main coil lead hasnt fallen off or a blown efi fuse or similar?

cheers

hmmm strange. ill have a look for the ecu ground wire tonite see if its loose.

if it is a cambelt change how much are we talking based on the valves not being damaged etc.

depends on where you go I guess, people on here will more than likely do it for beer money I got it done for £90 + parts in the end I think.

thanks ryan,

yh she does turn over normally, well struggles as i said before, so we hooked her up to mates car with jump leads to make sure the battery wasnt the reason but still struggled to turn over, seemed sluggish. when applying throttle she kinda fired up but never reached more than 1000rpm and then just died again imediatly. got a friend coming over tonite with a diagnostics test equipment to see if an error is displayed.

and regarding the fuel i am 100% certain that the correct fuel is in the car, i distictivly remember filling her up with high octane ( thought id treat her haha )

in that case if the engine started and ran (after you have released the starter) its unlikely to be the efi fuse.

could be the map sensor line has fallen off or the plug/wiring has become disconnected for some reason.

other thing it would be is the cam belt may have slipped a tooth or two which would also cause the symptoms you have described, line up the mark on the front pulley with 0 on the front cover then quickly whip the top cover off and check if the cam timing marks line up.

Hey guys.

GOOD NEWS

turns out it was a faulty rotor arm! the brass piece on the end was all bent up so i bent it back into the original position and hey presto the car started :)

the geezer who owned it before forgot to screw it in place too so the screws were floating about the distributor cap! not good.

So need a new rotor arm and dis cap, any one know where i can get one cheap?

thanks
