i was told this buy the guy that took my dads car which is a cat c write-off
hope this helps a few people he works with this all day long so should be good advice.

you buy the car back off scrap people they give first refusal not insurance company!
you get it fixed then you spend £36 re-registering the car (apperently this has to be done not totally sure why, believe its because it gets de-registered on write off)
then you get an mot done £55.
reinsure and road tax
there you go all sorted!

1 major thing dont go back to the same insureer they will most likely refuse to insure you.

yep it has to go to a vosa testing station to have a VIC test carried out if it has had one set on the reg just to make sure all the chassis/Vin plates match, they dont normally look into the damage area unless they want to be fussy as long as it has an MOT carried out after the accident and it passes thats fine

only problem with buying a cat-c writeoff now is when you apply for a V5 logbook it comes back with a note on it saying "this car has been badly damaged & repaired catagory C". very hard to sell a car with that plastered on the front of the log book. :(

surely all insurance companies would have the information of it being a write-off on the electronic system that everything is on nowadays?

as long as it has passed its mot an been allowed to be re-registered with vosa it shouldnt be a problem to insure i wouldnt think as repair works have to meet industry standard.

would still put people off though. even though the car could actually be better than an equivalent with minor damage

Mine is a Cat-C write off, and yeah after its all legit the logbook will say its been Cat C damaged which will reflect the value.

i bought my brother a clio that was a cat-c write off. i got it for £350.

its a p-reg clio, it only had a dent in the back door and a slight dent in the rear qauter. a weekend with me and my dad and you cant tell its been hit unless you really look. Had to go to vosa testing station still, and passed flying colours.

and the best bit is, is that the car had only done 24,000 miles when we bought it lol, the oil was and is soo clean, its golden coloured all the time, starts on the key and drives lovely.

ok so it maybe a bit harder to sell on but lets be honest here if you were repairing your own car that you want im sure you wouldnt be wanting to sell it on.

and if you must but cant get a good price you can always sell it in parts cant you making sure you get your money back out of the car.
