Have a friend with an ep85 and hes playing with the idea of fitting the engine and running gear from a st185 after being offered the whole car for cheap as chips.

would there be much custom work involved in fitting the gearbox and shafts and stuff into the ep85?

basically yes. the only thing you would gain is a tunnel for the propshaft. there would be custom work to get the engine to sit in the car, then more custom work to get the rear diff mounted and suspension altered to accept an independent setup. then you would need custom fabricated propshaft.

would require alot of work

Its been done by a lad here, ST205 engine box and transfer system into an EP95. He used the EP propshaft and rear axle but that gave him loads of bother as the rear diff ratio doesnt really match the transfer case ratios. He has got round it by fitting bigger wheels on the front but the real answer is to fit the rear sub frame of the ST into the EP and fit the ST rear axle set up in.

Its a project that doesnt really gain you much, you can get 350bhp out of a 5E easily enough, and to get more out of the 3SGTE you need to spend a lot more. The main benefit is LSDs are available so the ST set up, but at the money it would take to do the 3S conversion you could easily get custom diffs made for a 4WD EP.
