how do you find out about other peoples insurance without them knowing i dont htink its right at all!

Thats what I'm saying, I think he got his license plate num and just did a vehicle check, and the car is down as being a GL or whatever. But that doesn't necessarily mean its down as that on his insurance policy and I would've thought the only way to check that is to steal the lads cover sheet, or if he works for the insurance company?

where did you get his reg from dude and i dont think its fair that you are branding him a liar in public bit harsh in my eyes but that just my opinion

A previous post, I did it because i fail to beleve he has a Glanza V insured correctly at 17. He already said before that its on his parents insurance which again is invalid as its insurance fronting ..... but, even his parents havnt insured it correctly, yet he says he pays £3000 for insurance.. some bollocks somewhere dont you think?
Is that what the vehicles down as on his insurance though? Or his V5? On my V5 it just says Toyota Starlet (but has the VIN number obviously) but on my insurance its down as a 1994 Toyota Starlet GT Turbo (Import). So it might not be down on the V5 correctly, but he might've insured it correctly...if you get what I mean :homer:

V5 has no difference to insurance, whatever is on the MID database is what the car is insured as. V5 only matters for tax, also a turbo or no turbo doesnt make any difference to the dvla.

Whats on the MID database will be whats on your policy documents, thats up to your insurance to update the MID information correctly

Check your insurance documents, if its down as something different on your policy you need to contact your insurer to get it changed on the database... if it is a CD on the documents, your car is not insured properly!

Also, I deal with insurance at work updating the database for our fleet policy, on our managment page (allianz insurers) I can enquire about other vehicles, I dont use askmid

You have to check a box saying the car you are checking is your own...

"I confirm that the vehicle detailed above is registered, owned or insured by either my employer or myself and is regularly driven by me. I understand it is an offence to wrongfully obtain information of this nature without reasonable cause and if I fail to provide true reasons for acquiring information I may be committing an offence of unlawfully obtaining data contrary to section 55 of the Data Protection Act 1988. I declare that the information provided will not be used for any purposes unrelated to this enquiry. I agree to the terms of use as stated on this web site. "

well when i first insured my civic 1.5 lsi my insurance was £2500 which was too high so got a vtr well my mom di i was named driver it was still £1600 now ive been driving for 3 or 4 years with experince in company van on a 1.3 non turbo i dont think that i would be paying £1400 tpft do you???

more like £600 fc dont you think? and i know that my car is insured correctly its the third glanza that i have had and ive found it hard to insure all three not many companies have it on there database!

i wasnt having a go or anything just dont htink its right that you can look other peoples details up with out them knowing thats all!:)

well technically he is not taking anyones details. on this site when you post a picture up you are meant to blank out the plate number, if you dont then its your fault if others are able to.

it does get annoying when we pay xxx amount on a GT turbo and people get off with a non turbo.

and it would still be the same if i memorised you number plate on the street abd typed it in to seeing your number off a pic your posted up, so there isnt any kind of privacy being invaded.

edit: you should receive neg rep for pointing out someone who may be insuring illegally

i have my insurance certificate here, and my car is insured as a gt turbo import etc etc.

although on the motor insurance database none of that shows up, only info is that my car is insured. i think that mid is just based to what you insurer decides to pass on, and the bare minimum being confirmation that a car by that reg is insured with them.

CMR said he didnt use that site. but seriously we are human and one of us WILL tick that just to find out.

well that clearly isnt the point... as

A) your not meant to know that information if you have clicked something you shouldnt have, therefore rather than incriminating yourself you should bite your tongue. if CMR is ripping the information from another source then "if you fail to provide true reasons for acquiring information I may be committing an offence of unlawfully obtaining data contrary to section 55 of the Data Protection Act 1988" would still apply.

B), it "looks" like the fella has insured the car correctly! as long as his parents drive the car! what position are we in to say?

and C) how do we determine what and where MID retrieves and publishes its information? my info would suggest that i drive an unbranded but insured car! my insurance certificate says otherwise.

we are all human indeed. except for the kitten(dylan) lol.

As i said, I have access to the main database through Allianz at work. I basically control our fleet with regards to insurance.. i can add any car / van / bike onto it as i see fit.

on that there is an option to browse vehicle details, which does bring back the same information as the askmid page.. I dont have to tick a box to say im the owner.. but anyway.

Phil, in response to your question. On the policy submit page that I have access to I can select to protect registrar information on the MID.. I have never used this but I think when someone enquires about the vehicle it comes back as 'Insured - Private' or similiar.
As long as your docs are right you have no need to worry.

Also, to quote a guy up the page

edit: you should receive neg rep for pointing out someone who may be insuring illegally

I should receive neg rep? How, I'm trying to make people aware about the dangers of insuring these cars incorrectly. How would you feel if you thought you had insured your car as a GT Turbo.. then lost control of your car wrote it off or similar and was told you couldnt claim because the car is insured as a Starlet GLi etc, this might not be your fault.. the insurers might of misheard you or couldnt be arsed to put the right info on the documents.

We definitely need a sticky about insuring correctly..

agreed as as you'll see CMR, i think your pushing in the right direction overall mate, ive added positive rep to yourself in this thread :)

i think an approach more like stuarts would be less confrontational, i.e if the details appear wrong, then double check with insurer, as you say as long as your docs are right then you need not worry. so my docs are right MID doesnt have the entire picture, not my problem :)

im not sayin whether your have boxs to tick or whatever the law doesnt change. thats not what im geting at though, my question is where is the MID information gathered from? what are insurance companies obliged to provide for the database?
