Cusco diff on its way out?

Hey peeps,

I've had a cusco diff on my car for the last 18 months, it knocks and bangs when turning slowly and it can be felt locking and releasing through the steering wheel, this is far worse when going slow but i've been told it's normal for one of these diffs.

Recently it has developed a clicking noise when turning which sounds similar to a cv joint but on both sides, this only happens when the clutch is in. I had a mechanic drive it last week and he said the diff was on its way out, but i'm not so sure i think it might be barings or something similar, i thought when a diff is worn it would stop knocking and work as an open diff again.

Can anybody shed some light on what the problem may be and how i could tell what condition the diff is in?

Good point, had the same oil in it since it was fitted (about 18 months), i'll be changing the box in the next few weeks as the synchros are gone. i just need to know if it's worth refitting the lsd to the new box. I suppose if i change the oil and the clicking stops then i'll know it was bad oil causing the problem

Not sure if it's a 1.5 or 2 way, will be splitting the box on Saturday, will i be able to tell if it's knackered when it's out?

Could do with more input, is it normal to feel the diff locking and releasing through the steering wheel when going around slow corners less than 60kph

They bang and clunk going round corners the cusco 1.5 diff is well known for it I had one in mine did it more when going slower the trick I found was to keep the power on when cornering and for roundabouts but yes it is normal a good oil will reduce it alot tho.
