g6 gear box

Not much work but not much gain either. The six speed box leaves you with cruise RPM slightly HIGHER than a C52 or C56 five speed. It's designed for the torqueless (compared to the 4efte) 20v 4AGE engine. All it will do is force you to change gears more often. Not to mention the six speed boxes aren't nearly as strong as their five speed counterparts. This has been proven many times in 4AGTE projects.

Are we talking the 6speed box from a Levin BZ-R or from a Corolla G6, both may be the same but im not familar with the corolla hatch only Levin's....

If your on about the one out of a BZ-R. dont bother their a weak gearbox, most BZ-R owners would preffer the BZ-G 5speed gearbox because their far stronger. They wont handle as much power, and personally i dont see the need to have a 6th gear, ive never wanted one thats for sure.

So I personally wouldnt bother with one mate, they wont handle even close to the power of a 5 speed box especially if you want to fit it to somthing with turbo like a Glanza.

i have one, and you can never have enough gears to keep the car on the boil in real world driving, yea the internals are thinner but i dont know of any that have gone and the celica 6 speed c series boxes have withstood some boost,

6th is shorter than your current fith(slightly)
with first and second being essentialy the same 3rd 4th and 5th are closely stacked wrc style lol
also worth notiing that running 17s with 40 profile will restore the gearing making 6th idential to your 5th
it makes life alot easier if you get the shifter cables from the donor corolla.

also its alot easier if you source one from the 4efe g6 and not the 4AFE G6R(like i did) otherwise you will need to convert your box using your current belhousing.

If you have a late boost curve you're probably running a big turbo and hopefully big power. I would seriously recommend against these boxes, they may very well help to keep your motor on boost for more of the time but it's likely to explode 2nd or 3rd too.

I *have* seen these fail and not even on a turbo motor, a mildly modified blacktop 4age running something like 170hp at the fly was enough to well and truly smash second gear. The Levin/Trueno guys swap from the C160 to the C56 (6 -> 5 speed) for this reason. The factory blacktop ECU actually has a feature to retard engine timing momentarily while shifting to avoid exploding the weak gearbox.

well in saying that the factory box cant hold it either..... im on gearbox 3 in 6 months since geo was here in cairns..... and now it is tuned has a gobfull more power.... its either i find a box or send it away to get a full custom set of gears....... 2nd and 3rd and the diffs are releasing themselves alot....

Can't beat a well maintained standard LSD box from the factory!

Yes six gears are cool, but it'll last a month in a well tuned tubby.

My g6 box has been on the car for around 4 years and whilst my starlet is nothing special power wise it has coped perfectly with 210bhp. It never crunches or misses a shift, and the gear shifts are lovely and short and effortless :D

Rebuild your box with a low km's gearset from a corolla C56, get them cryo treated, high quality diff and a decent clutch setup that isn't ridiculously harsh. High clamp 4 puck with a sprung centre will hold your power without shock loading the gearset every single shift. If that doesn't solve your problems I would be very surprised... the C52/56 gearboxes aren't weak, if the rest of your drivetrain is up to the task they are definitely good well into the 11's.

As I posted above, they really aren't worth the effort. The same box (save for the bellhousing) is used on the superstrut equipped AE111 Levin and Trueno's and people routinely ditch them and go back to the C56 5 speed box due to unreliability and weakness.

If you MUST have one (despite it being weak and having gear ratio's not ideally suited to a turbo anyway) then it's a very easy swap if you can source one from the 4e-fe powered Corolla G6. Literally bolt in as I understand it.

thanks thats great would i need anything else from g6, or is it only box i need. i had a g6r before glanza and liked the gearbox so that is why i'd like to do this.

I haven't personally done the swap (for all of the above reasons) but I don't believe there's anything specific to the G6 you require other than the gearbox. Shifter cables should work as is and the mounts should be fine. You will need to use the starlet driveshafts obviously.

Oh and another thing I'm unsure about is the speedo sender, it is possibly an electronic one, you can probably swap in the mechanical unit from the starlet box. Reverse sender may also be different, but are interchangeable.
