Just a quick q but i was sure that using petrol or thinners would damage the paint on a car no???

Petrol is ok left on for couple of minutes. Helps remove tar pretty well too. Never had any problems using it. Thinners can be used to wipe over surface but is risky and shouldnt be left on for any time especially on dodgy paintwork. Have seen it used for this purpose with bad results but it can work. I usually use tar and glue remover or a compound for those jobs myself.

If you're still attempting this then try the below.

Soak WD40 over the residue, and then get a card, a credit card type of some sort and work away at it. This should then start breaking off as the WD40 should weaken the residue. After you have removed it all, give it a wash:)
