idle high and engine jerks all the time

Hi guys, I’ve been having a problem with my engine for the past two weeks. I have a transplanted 4e-fte engine in a daihatsu charade. The ecu type im using is an 89661-10040. It’s been running fine since the transplant late 2007 and has only given me problems just this past two weeks. My idle is high, between 1,200 to 1,000 and when you pump the gas it sounds like it’s drowning . the funny thing is, it idles smoothly and doesn’t knock (but at a high rev). I can’t lower the rpm as I have already taken off the idle screw in an attempt to lower it (the butterfly completely closed) and it still revs at 1,000. I use the car everyday, to and from work. I’ve cleaned the throttle body, TPS, ICV,Distributor, and even checked the timming belt. I am at a loss… any ideas? I can’t tell if my TPS or ICV is broken cause I don’t know how to manually test it.

not with a timing light. but i have tried retarding it and advancing the timing by ear... and still no luck... so i just put it back to the same old setting.

Already adjusted the TPS and idle stop screw and is still the same. I‘ve also reseted the ECU just to make sure. It’s getting worse everyday. My rpm would be at 1200 most of the time. But for some reason it would go to normal at around 700 and run smoothly for a shortwhile, then after a few minutes it’ll run like crap. I now have a new simptom, it no longer starts easily, it turns for about three tries before firing up.

My GT has just started to develop these exact same symptoms! Normally idles at 700rpm and now occasionally it idles at 1000/1200 after a drive. however if i just blip the throttle the idle will go back down to 700rpm.

Also just recently it isnt starting first time like it used to and turning four or five times before finally starting.

to the OP, check the map sensor

yours sounds like a weak throttle return spring, mine is the same. as the for the starting, maybe it's down to increased temps?

Thanks mate. Have just found out the idling issue is down to the throttle return spring.
I'm not sure about the starting issue though. Hasn't done it for two or 3 days now, but will then seem to just do it for no reason
could well be down to the temperature.
Repped :p

Hi guys. I’ve already cleaned my sparksplugs, high tension wires, rotor, and distributor cap. It still jerks or misfires. How do you check the Map sensor? Any ideas?

check your timing, coolant temp sensor and knock sensor as those are a few things that affect starting.

Try checking the ECU for faults see if any fault codes are stored might come up a sensor is faulty n bingo! worth a shot
