Is Forging Worth it in 2024?

I never knew that. Dyou have any links ?

Never used one myself.

You could buy what is called a supercore, so turbo without the turbine housing.

Or a full turbo and swap the housings over. Wastegate penny would need welding.

this takes away drivability IMO. I want to be able to drive spiritedly and not worry about breaking a gearbox. its always in the back of mind (i wonder how much more the box will take before it dies)
yeah...it does to some degree
but i have a 5e, so the pick up isn't too bad.....its my compromise for gearbox longevity.

i see you're playing some russian roulette with your gearbox :) ...use quality gear oil and keep it fresh, hopefully that will help extend its life

@daniel_g @gorganl2000 Thanks. Learn something new here daily from you guys.
Where could I get a mamba or kinugawa ballbearing turbo from complete with vf/td fitting from?
How would they compare to the td04 and vf28 I already have?

You can find them on ebay. They are designed to be bolt on the Subarus so an improvement over the TD / VF.

They use a billet GTX style compressor wheel, so lightweight and modern design. Dual ceramic ball bearing. Can run higher boost.

2860 is the smallest then 63, 67, 71, 76.

I had all this saved for years but went with Owens in the end.

Thanks man. I will have a look. So will that 2860 spool faster than my current TD04 but make more power than the vf28?

I remember speaking to the guy at Midnite Turbo's a while back about his billet wheel turbos.

https://www.facebook.com/MidNiteTurbo/

I'm unsure how this one would compare to the one above you linked

"TD04L 19T HYBRID 11-0 Blade BILLET TURBO
full rebuild kit including twin port steel thrust bearing for higher boost applications
brand new melett shaft
exhaust housing and compressor housing sand blasted
compressor housing and CHRA has been machined to
inducer: 46mm
exducer:58mm
stock
inducer: 40mm
exducer: 56mm
fitted with a 11 Blade GTX Billet wheel perfect for maximum power output without sacrificing spool
VSR balanced comes with balancing sheet
This turbo is perfect for 330hp(dyno sheet available)
Comes with powder coated actuator in black if needed
Perfect upgrade for
Subaru wrx
Forged starlet
Forged MX5"

Think the billet TD04s are a waste of time. Had mine rebuilt twice and it didn't make any more power than a stock TD04 did at around 1 bar. They still use old journal bearings.

The whole point of having a built engine is that allows for newer turbos and increased boost.

Yea billit don't mean it's any more powerful just stronger, a common mistake folk make when talking about billit stuff :)

Point taken.
How do you find your Owens Turbo in comparison to the td04 and journal bearing ones you have used previously?

I'll let you know when its on! Won't be any time soon. Its a long process getting Starlets built up to a fair spec as I'm sure you know.

Can't see why that wouldn't work.

The Garretts or Pulsar copies can come with a T25 flanged housing. Its a bit older now most are V band.

You would still have the problem of the downpipe needing made or adjusted to suit the turbing housing outlet flange. Which is normally 3" V band.

Good point. I didn’t think about the downpipe :s.
I probably would be better off sticking to a vf/td flange turbo. Just unsure which one to use?
I have a td04 fitted at the moment - unsure if it’s as 13t or 16g - and a vf28 in the garage I was going to get rebuilt. However I’ve read that the vf28 is laggy on the 4e?
As you said, going forged opens up the possibilities of newer turbos but I guess I’m a bit limited with sticking to the td/vf kit.

I wasted so much on TDs and VFs over the years.

It might work out fine with the VF28, you sould get over 300 with that.

Keep an eye out every October for the WEPR sale. And those Pulsar turbos are around 700, bit less on a black Friday sale.

Your kit might be worth selling at some point.
