New Owner - 1 Bar, very few mods

Hey all,
I've just picked up my first Starlet in the from of a 1997 Glanza V.

The previous owner had done a couple of mods such as a Cat-Back exhaust, HKS BOV, induction cone filter and a Blitz boost gauge. I've not had chance to look much further than that yet but I was told of nothing else.

Now what I'm concerned about is on high boost its showing 1 bar of boost. This seems somewhat higher than stock. I can't see any signs of a boost controller or bleed valve and the actuator doesn't look to be adjustable.

The boost guage looks like a genuine blitz item so I would be inclined to beleive it. At this poin't I don't have anything else to work from.

Low boost is capped at .5 bar and there if a very noticeable difference between them.

--------------------

What are these engines like when the boost is run up to 1 bar in pressure?

I have read that I should be getting fuel cut but its deffinately not?

Is 1 bar SAFE if the fueling is correct and no knock is detected?

Does the ECU/Engine use a knock sensor and are there any tricks to get a reading from it?

--------------------

I will chuck my wideband probe on it later to make sure its not going lean for starters.

Any advice on how to lower the pressure? I'm stuck to using Low boost at the moment.

You must have a Jam actuator fitted to it.

The Jam actuator looks just like the stock one but it runs 1bar on high and 0.5 on low :)

can you see a fuel cut defender fitted? if it was running 1 bar and not fitted it would be hitting fuel cut most definately, without supporting mods, like rrfpr and free flowing manifold its going to do some piston damage running 1 bar.
You will feel a noticeable difference going from low boost to high boost even on a standard starlet, so could just be the gauge, or a leak, but get it checked out for peace of mind! :)

Where would I be looking for the FCD? By the ECU? (Where is the ecu?? passenger footwell??) I'm guessing it COULD be wired in anywhere really?

Assuming the fuel is not going lean and I'm not hitting fuel cut is 1bar OK? Or stressing things too much?

I keep seeing mention of the stock manifold and problems with cylinder temps. Is this true?

1 bar needs a fmic and uprated manifold to run safe also with an fcd and fpr setup at least too. yes ecu is behind the glove box and fcd should be wired there if equipped with it already!

Ok will check into that and I guess better keep to low boost for now. I'm pretty sure the manifold will be stock as its still got a heat sheild over it.

Is there any reason I couldn't use a piggyback ECU rather than a FPR? Does the injectors have enough capability to run 1bar on standard fuel pressure?

it could be boost solenoid have you got standard filter black bit leading to the turbo the a vac pipe is on this if you follow it it will go to the solenoid if you block the pipe it will reduce boost giving false reading (some ppl bypass this its on this site how to do it somwere)
also hows your clutch? does it sound like it going off its tits ?this can increase boost due to the slip this happened to and friends car he was hitting fuel cut until he got a new clutch fitted
take your car to 4000 rpm before putting foot down see how she boosts you will get less boost spike and and a better reading you may be spiking to a bar.
if it boost in no time im certain its your your clutch

fcd could be placed behind the glove box (most likely or i have seen people put them on the bulk head under the bonnet)

standard injectors will cope with the 1 bar, no need to run a piggy back, but obviously youl be able to get a more accurate tune.

and yeah its true what youve read about the standard mani, it does its job on a standard car great as thats what its designed for, turn up the boost and it wont let enough of the hot air out due to the restriction in runner 3, causing melted pistons

Apprently the clutch was recently done and its certinaly not slipping.

I had a nose around in the glove box and found a JAM performance thing... FCD??? Also the ECU has a sticker on it but I think it looks like a standard ECU and I can't see that its been apart. I'm thinking its standard.

LOL Looks like Wedsport Revspec is brake pads... making the ECU an obvious place to put that sticker :haha::haha:

Jam fcd and Jam actuator?

It might be worth whipping off the mani heat shield to see if you have a Jam cast mani too.

I think all three were available together in Japan as 1 bar ct9 kit

toms is on to it :D if u got jam fuel cut ull most probs have the actuator im sure they come as a kit.get a boost controller and lower it that way . a block of wood under your pedal wud sort it :p

i looked up your sticker and came across a site in tailand i found firmware for the emanage may b useful for some1

I'm pretty sure you can only raise boost with a boost controller? So I guess the Actuator is set at .5 bar and there is a solenoid that raises it to 1bar? Is that right?

I've just wrestled the Manifold heat shield off only to find a few casting numbers and certianly nothing that says JAM...

Is it essential that I refit the shield?? Was a bit of a PITA tbh!

your hi /lo boost button is connected to the solenoid .put it in low boost and put a boost controller on you will then be able to control its level from .5 upwards just never take it out of low boost until you have supporting mods you need

Right, i would buy a hks adjustable actuator, set it to 0.8bar, then you can buy an EBC when ou have sorted out your fuelling etc and raise it to 1bar,

EDIT - manifold looks std to me...

Dont see why people are going off on one about boost solenoids and clutches and all sorts, more than likley a jam actuator, i had one with a jam fcd on my V when i bought it,

Bought a HKS one and set it up and worked fine. Ill have an Emanage blue and harnesses up for sale next week..
