Hi guys,

Im new to the GT turbo scene. but have to say....... What a car!!!

Anyways to the point..

Ive been driving my car for about a week now, i have a gt turbo 1993 ( the one with the square lights ) and have had no problems with it untill now.

I noticed the car was idleing at around 2k which i thought was weird then remembered the seller told me he set it to this for a better ' pull away'. Anyway i adjusted this to idle at 950 and the car seemed fine, however after driving for around 20 mins the revs dropped to about 500-450 and was on the verge of stalling, infact once it did stall on me. what could be this problem?

Sorry to babble on but i have another problem too...

I think my turbo's nakerd, sometimes when idleing it smokes from the exhaust and seems to come from beneath the rear end of the car too !! could this be time for a new turbo?

anyhelp would be great guys :)

Thanks

you shouldnt be messing with the idle at all man the reason for a high idle when you start it cold is to heat up the engine once it gets to a nice temp it will drop down

im sure someone can give you the correct warm idle revs

as for pull away id say he is talkin shit mate ive never heard of it

what color smoke is coming out the exhaust?

Welcome mate!

Leave it to warm till your radiator fan kick in. Then adjust your idle to 950 or whatever you like and see how it goes and report back.

Oh ok so let the car reach optimum temp then adjust bak to 950, idle's higher when cold due to choke of some sort?

And as for the smoke its a blueish colour, very slightly.

thanks

Yes! At choke mode it gives some more rpm to warm the engine faster.
About the smoke it is very common turbo seals to go. If it is very slightly just ignore it but have an idea on your back of your mind that you may need turbo seals later next year.;) A rebuilt kit for those turbos are from 50-100 euros and covers everything you may need.

Another thing that makes a big difference is cleaning and rebuilding the idle control valve. If its done more than 60/70 k it wouldnt hurt to clean that first then adjust the idle when ( as stated above) the engines at full temp.... Hope you get it sorted

Sweet, yeah well i say a little, a nice plume of smoke comes out when pulling away and gives the car behind a chocking haha.

So you reckon its cool for now, nothing to worry about? if i keep driving her it wont fuck my engine up or anything? just wear the seals more? sorry im a total turbo virgin untill now.

yh ive seen the kits on ebay for around 69 quid. Easy to dismantal and do myself or better to get a mechanic to do the work? approx hours?

Many thanks guys

ps how do you give rep?

Ye should be ok to drive, just dont go to mad . If you search the smoke issue theres lots of info on it so you can pinpoint were its coming from and why! Yea if you have basic knowledge of mechanical things you should be able to rebuild the turbo yourself...... Just makesure you line up the air side blades with the shaft, it has to go back as it came out as the unit is balanced dude !!! Very important

just been informed it could be the oil valve stem seals on my engine rather than the turbo seals. is there a way to determine which one it actually is?

or which one would be easier and cheaper to do first?

welcome, also with the smoking u gotta watch your oil level also so u can definetly know what its burning

ok guys so after a week of driving her she seems to have settled down a bit, the smoke seems to have virtually gone, although my mate said he saw her smoking on boost ever so slightly, i put this down to the car being sat around for two years prior to be buying it and maybe some oil was settled somwhere and now the engine/exhasut etc is reaching optimum temp its gradually burning it off. also ive adjusted the revs back to 950/1000 at optimum engine temp ie when the fan kicks in and she seems to be running alot better now and not dropping to 500rpm! although from cold it takes 5/10 mins for her to settle to 1000.

any thoughts on this guys?

cheers rich
