west london is imo the better part of london to stay although there are nice areas in the north, south and east.
depends on how much you want to spend and what sort of place you want, lots of pubs have nice acomadtion and there are plenty of nice hotels around, if you want to be in the center soho is a interesting and awsome place to stay, loads to do round there

Not to be confused with north west London, steer clear of that, there a nasty areas everywhere in London it would probably be easier to tell where your looking at hotels and we can advise wether or not the area is nice, as said above it all depends on budget and how much you will pay for a pint etc because if your in central it's pretty expensive, also how much you want to use the underground etc, just a word of advise it would probably be cheaper to get yourself an oyster cars at the first tube station you got to which you can use on the bus and the tube an can just top it up as you go!!
Edit: just a quick thought I worked in a hotel fitting the air-conditioning in euston street right by the station, it was called MIC was a really nice hotel and think it was quite reasonable worth a google search atleast.

for a few days away just, change of scenery etc.

Stay in the city center the tube closes about 12.
I liked County Hall Premier inn its close enough to Covent garden for drinkn' and right beside the big wheel, london aquarium, westminster , st.pauls etc..
is a touch expensive but you'd end up paying the extra in travel..
check out other holiday inns / premier hotels in the area.
may be worth getting an oyster card for travel http://www.ukstudentlife.com/Travel/Transport/London/Underground.htm#OysterCard

cheers richie, will look into it later.

Premier inn near the london eye is pretty good. Check out Trip Advisor for some advice on where to stay and where to avoid
