problems with temperature gauge

recently i had noticed the engine temperature has been dropping down.when i leave it idleling it goes up to the normal position,just roughly above half.when i drive it,it drops down to cold and the same when i turn the heating on.would the temerature sensor or the thermostat be gone?thanks guys

mines being doing this, an where the temp gauge is connected, the connecter had corroded used an old tooth brish an some black magic, gave it a good clean up works perfect now

sounds like the thermostat cos if it was the sensor it wouldnt b heating up when idling not sure though really

mine was going up, then going all crazy, like up an down very fast.
