Rads, oil coolers, FMICs...

Looking to get my custom FMIC fitted, was going to use a civic half width rad but decided against it after Dave @ TMD advised me against it. I was looking at getting a custom rad made that would be dual core, narrower than standard but wider than civic, so I figured the extra capacity would compensate for the reduced surface area. however, a guy I spoke to for a quote for fitting the fmic reckons the rad would get i the way of the intercooler piping, and I should go for the half width. I explained my concern about reduced cooling efficiency, he suggested I get an oil cooler.

Now, I've always been wary of these after Riko put one on his 5EFHE and it seized. I've noticed a few starlets have them and apparently run fine though.

So, what problems are likely to arise from an oil cooler? what could cause engine seizure? how much does it typically cost to install them, and how much do they contribute to cooling?

Any advice on my situation much appreciated.

No problems at all, get a kit made for you with a thermostat built into the sandwhich plate, you cant go wrong.

I just drove to castle coombe and hooned it around track with mine on and no issues at all :) just much more stable oil temps

absolutely, i shudder to think what my oil temps would have been round llandow without the cooler.

mine's a Mocal Kit with 80degree thermostat built in, no pressure drop, no problems, just oil at the correct temp ;)

Even with the cooler yours goes above the 80's when hammering it. Comes down nice and quick though.

yeah push it hard consistantly and the temps can get as high as 100 degrees on the ct9 / hybrid. seems to run cooler on the td04 but i'm only running low boost at the moment.

would it not just be easier to fit a fmic that doesnt mean you need a half size rad which also means you wont need the oil cooler?? or have i missed something?

Fitting a FMIC in a Sera bumper is impossible without removing the central support and cutting a large ammount of the bumper away. Some people have fitted aftermarket bumpers, but I want to keep the car looking stock. Thus, I have designed a FMIC that fits where the condenser used to live.
