Okay so my router (it's a linksy not sure which one) totally spazzes out especially when trying to play a game on-line - Counter Strike/COD4 for example you click refresh servers and it takes ages to show any and when it does you click to enter and it says server not responding - Anyone have any ideas how to configure the router or sort it out to stop this? my download speed's around 1mbps (when downloading) think it's a 10mb line - It's getting pretty annoying now, any ideas? It also takes ages to load webpages... worse than when i had 56k !!! :(

try resetting the modem there should be a button or turn it off for a few minutes
as it ever worked properly
have you changed settings
maybe your ip instead

I'm not sure tbh we've had the router a few months now sometimes its fast sometimes it's really slow - resetting sorts the browing the internet out but not game servers etc? its really annoying me now :( Nothing worse than paying for 10mbps and getting 28.8k speeds :'(

Try port forwarding specifically for said program.
In the settings for each game somewhere there should be a places say "Port" (I.E 5432)

Find that and change it to 3000 (good number thats not usally used)

Open command promt and click "ipconfig" and look for the ipv4 address, subnet mask and default gateway.

Write them down (or leave the screen open).

Open your internet browser and type your IPv4 adress into the search bar (I.E 192.168.1.2)

This will open your router configuration page (find your password here http://compnetworking.about.com/od/routers/qt/linksys_passwds.htm )

Find the Virtual server setting (usally under connection/NAT)

Add a new port ,depending on the type of router the settings change slightly.

If it has the TCP/UDP option click both.
Name it anything (I.E COD4)
Port in 3000
Port out 3000

And copy your ip address that you got earlier from command promt into the ip address box and if it asks for default gateway or subnet mask add them also.

Click apply.

Should work as it now has its own connection :)

Also check your network is secure and you've not got half the neighbourhood downloading from it. That might cause it to run a bit slower

Id recommend checking the linksys website for a firmware upgrade. There may be known issues which are addressed.

Doesnt sound like a router problem so far. Forget online games for a moment and trying finding the route cause of your slow speeds.

Are you using an ethernet connection?
Are you connected to your main master socket?
Are you using any extension cables?
Is there any noise or interference on your landline phone?
If you do a speed test via an ethernet connection what speed do you get?
Try the same at peak times, after 6pm and weekends, what speed do you get?

Assuming this is ADSL.

I've used a Linksys router, I've also used BT's, Asus and the Netgear ones. Had problems with Linksys one, it was terrible, unstable, firmware upgrades didn't do anything for me so I swapped it. I'd never buy that rubbish again, interface was limited and poor.

Also had problems with some wireless networking cards causing minute latency spikes.

agreed on the linksys boxes - I used to sell them and they were terrible. Their ability to use error correction was woeful and used to result in endless retries that eventually made the buffer fill up and the router would just sit there.

I did get a firmware upgrade that sorted mine though - it was a beta release I got direct from linksys/cisco but I dont know if it was ever put up on their site. It was for one of those routers that took a 3G datacard in the top... cant remember the model number now.

I have a netgear router at home and it was a heap of crap too but after some tweaking of settings it seems a lot better.

If I was staying somewhere permanent I would use a laptop BSD box as a simple wireless router. It is the setup that has caused me the least amount of issues in the past, cheap cheerful, proven and configurable - no waiting around for a router manufacturer to hopefully fix a bug that they wont acknowledge.

EDIT - if the OP wants to give it a try here is a howto (I never used this so dont know if it works but it looks okay) http://www.codealias.info/technotes/wireless_router_using_freebsd

I think I found the cause of the problem - A while before my dad bought the router he also purchased a 'Vonage' phone package which connect's in between the modem and computer / router. I traced the route in the cmd box and found that the vonage box was also acting as a router so in theory it had 2 routers in line thus confusing the system as they'd both try and force an IP, However i corrected this by removing the router and replacing it with a ethernet network switch then from the network switch I added a Netgear wireless router for the people with laptops in my house hold / iphone etc everything now runs spot on! as for ports forwarding it doesn't seem to forward at all used all different ports etc and it's not having any of it :(

Thanks for all the help an rep had been added!

You'll more than likely have to make your IP static or the port you picked is being used.
You can use this website ( http://www.portforward.com )to do set up a static IP.
Go into command promt and type NETSTAT -A to see which ports are used

Sounds like a router problem to me if a reset of the router fixes the issue. If it was poor copper, contention issue or interference on the line a reboot of the router wouldnt sort it.

You can have a copper line issue with fluctuating speeds and stability. Once the line is reset and sync is reastablished (handshake) you can sync up at the max speed, but the speed will soon drop again.

but that wouldnt stop online gaming working. Dont get me wrong Ive seen very weird things happen with routers and cabling, even seen a fan in a room take out the signal enough to kill a connection so I am always acutely aware of environmental issues etc but I would generally start stripping away hardware if possible as it is something you can do on your end.... wait around to get lines tested etc is a nightmare.
