Shaft Play

right -

i have a couple of dealings recently with turbos advertised as having

quote - "no shaft play"

on recieving both of the turbos there is clearly shaft play - up and down - not - in and out -

now the two different people who they have been bought off claim that the oil pressure builds up round the bearings and levels the shaft - i agree with this but surely there is a limit.

im talking amounts of around 2mm on 1 of the turbos ct9 hybrid

and 1mm on the other tdo4l

the one i have on my car at the minute is the hybrid and i have hardly used it around 70 miles as there is a faint grinding noise at times and it sounds like the turbo.

i have ordered td04 kit obviously i already have the turbo but i dunno wot to do as i dont wanna put the td04 on if its fuuked cos IMO it means im gunna b driving the car with a poorly turbo wotever i do

Help please :)

I know from you describing the noise that your hybrid will only last a while longer. The noise will get louder and the car will get less smooth to drive (may start to feel a lack of power at this stage). Eventually the smoke will come and it's time for a new turbo.

However 1mm of side to side play on your other turbo sounds ok.

Do check that you have no oil leaks (especially oil feed and oil return) though and oil pressure is ok as this could be the problem to start with. In fact hopefully that is the problem so you can still save the hybrid before it's too late :)

my current td04 had a fair bi o play in it when i got it in the post, but once on the car with oil pressure it was fine, no play at all.

Same goes for my TD04, slight shaft play when it arrived, fitted, running and it's fine. I have a spare one (from a friend) sitting around and I've just dived into the under house garage and had a feel (oooooerrrr missus) and it's able to move around 1-2mm, wiggle wiggle.

I'd be happy if I fitted it though, exactly the same as the one that's on.
