Shock Absorber Troubles!

A mate of mine, and fully qualified mechanic have hit a snag when installing Jamex springs into the already existent shock absorbers. The fronts went in just fine, no problems but as soon as we hit the rear we just couldn't get the damn top bolt from the shock removed so as to put the new spring in. It just kept spinning around with the shock shaft to no avail. We've tried shocking it with a hammer, using CRC to loosen it up, vice grips on the end..

Anyone got any tips as to how to remove the top-hat bolt without causing further damage? The thread on the 'bolt' looking portion has taken a hammering already. And before asked, I have looked through a sh** tonne of google sites.

Cheers.

mines gone as well on one of the rear shocks.
Havent figured out so far how to remove it.
Guess ull have to weld kinda bolt to it on top.and then just chop it off once removed.

a fully qualified machanic would know that you just use an impact driver to remove them in seconds. but if you have now burred over the end then you will either have to chop off the topmount, or chop off the top of the damper unit and replace.

The shock absorbers are not OEM. We did go about it like a bull in a China shop, and not exactly the best way - however, even when we tried rectifying the problem with the proper solution (being an adjustable wrench holding the tip whilst a spanner spins the bolt off), it's just too stuck. It's like someone's had a really crap day and taken it out on the thing. We tried impact and torque wrenches - had three of us trying. CRC, silicone spray. We also tried grinding the burring off square again, tried again with vice grip and spanner. It's just not budging one bit.

Mate said the tig-weld option, though we don't know anyone with one. Am thinking just replace the whole shock at a wreckers, then save up for some new Teins.

Try grabbing the very end of the shaft with a pair of vice grips. The shock never really goes that far into the body as the springs usually bind before then.

Yeah I think replacing all of them would be the best option and do it myself so it's torqued properly. Will get a cheap one from the wreckers just to install the last spring so it's sitting even for now. The shock could have been cross-threaded - oh well.

Thanks for the feeback.

Managed to get it done - ended up taking it to a mate who had an impact wrench. :D Back to riding even again.
