165/50/15

WOW TOBY?! could i see a pic of your tires on the rims? that sounds like some serious strecthing!

Most Starlets handle like shit as they have saggy old rubber bushes that have done ridiculous mileage! Most will add braces, lower arm bars, adjustable rods but it's the bushes that hold it all together so do these before the nice looking parts!

Granted the rear axle setup isn't the best but I guarantee it with balls of steel and clever insight you can get your Starlet up with the best of them rest assured. Being a FWD go kart we will always have more confidence than the RWD and 4WD boys so you can do a lot of upsets. Roll cages make a huge difference as the Starlet floor plan is really thin, it's a shopping trolley not a racer! Even a simple 6 point bolt in will transform the car over night just watch those bushes!!!!!!

i have to agree, couldn't have said it better! i see so many people complaining viciously about how their car when most of their probs could be cured by replacing a few, cheap as chips, worn bushings. i'd imagine they wear out pretty fast considering our shitty roads. i changed most of mine as soon as i got my car (a '95) and noticed a massive improvent in comfort and handling, all for less than €40! a fresh engine mount also remedied a few more vibration and handling problems (€70).
fresh dampers would be another quick remedy for most handling problems i hear bout. lowering springs on stock dampers = shit handling and worse comfort.

to finish; Quality tires are BY FAR the best mod you can give your starlet, they will improve launching, cornering, top speed, 1/4 mile, and braking. definitely the most "bang per buck!" :drive:

I run:
Dunlop SP Sport 01: 205/50 R17 @ 3 bar on 7x17's (obviously not a starlet! :haha: unbelieveable grip in the wet)

Yeah exactly that so true, it's tempting to by the shiny stuff like braces as it looks good and granted does make a difference. Bushes are boring and you can't see them but will be a big cause in most cases. I would say ours would be easily in the top 10 of handling Starlets and we use the thinnest tires.

For you reference here are the tires on our old Wed Sports, will see if I can get a picture but you can make out the stretch and 888 tread from here:

thanks for the pic toby

thanks for that, not half as streched as i thought it'd look. if you can find a close up i'd appreciate it. i'd definitely like to try a 165 tyre width on a starlet now that i see that, but i think i'll try a slightly narrower rim if i can find 1, even 1/2" narrower. i'm all for the lowest weight wheel nd tire combo possible.

:teach: lightweight wheels=
greater acceleration,
much higher wheel rate (better than any similar spring rate increase) which translates to far better handling
and correct me if i'm wrong, but tires that narrow will also increase top speed??

Wrong way round get the larger wider tires on the front in a FWD unless you've swapped to save tread :)

No worries on the picture will see what I can find, it just means you get a 100% contact patch rather than say 90% where the tire pitches in the middle or on the sides.

i see your point toby, so say with a 7 inch wide wheel, a 165 tyre will work better stretched than say a 195 width tyre?

even tho the 195 is wider the 165 stretched will give a better contact area?

Exactly that buddy :) If you compare a 195/50 Proxey against a 195/50 888, as in next to each other you will see the 888 will tower over the proxey although they appear to have the same dimensions. This is beacuse 888 have far less tread pattern and a lot more rubber which makes the sidewall massive.

Everyone will be different though pending needs for us down to the ground..

Yeah, the proxey is still a road tire but will be physically smaller than a 888 even though the dimensions quoted are the same.

I reckon we should all use the tyres that Streetech uses, they sound awesome.

sidenote, semis are not good in wet unless they are wet terrain tyres.. its not the grooves its all in the tyre compound & centre contour that affect the tyre's performance in the wet... that said i dont go over 50kmph in wet conditions as it slides like mad lol..

so far funnily enough nobody has mentioned a single set of drag tyres.. most mentioned are either road or circuit tyres... hmmm

99.9% will never really use slicks and you can't use them on the road so no point mentioning, if we did consider then Mickey T Jnr radial and Hoosier P1's would be my choice. You don't go over 50kph in the wet, now that's wet :p
