@ Paul Interesting tips , but I was talking about engine torque independant of spark plug torque. I did notice the enamel on one undertightened plug was badly cracked compared to the other plugs , maybe due to the heat you refer to but the spark plug colours were all the same. The more heat may also be due to the poor manifold runner on this cylinder.

@ dac x2 Re overtightening I think cleaning the head thread helps to get proper feel. I have new leads that completely seal and when I undertightened the spark plug this gave some blow by , the leads would pop out a little indicating the plugs were leaking.

dac69er is very right. manuals are written to also protect the vending companies from noobs who mess things up then claim law suits suing the vendor for damage caused etc etc. (some) things don't always have to be sooooooooooooo precise to the point of saying, "if you don't do this, there will be catastrophic failure".. :)
