Valve Stem Seals or PCV Valve?

Hey guys, I've got a fully built 5efe engine. It has done 1400km (Sorry I'm from Australia :p) and it was blowing greyish (slightly blue as well) smoke after long idling. Example, at the lights, if I idle and take off there will be a cloud of smoke. Alot of smoke. This will clear up as I keep driving. My mechanic believes it to be either valve stem seals, PCV valve or turbo. I've checked my intercooler piping and there is not one drop of oil so turbo is crossed off. I blocked off the PCV valve with a hose and bolt and blocked off the throttle part with a hose and bolt and the smoking decreased by at least 80%. The colour of the smoke seemed to change to closer to black. Can it be that the PCV valve has been causing this issue the whole time? BTW, my car drank almost all of the engine oil in about 1.5 weeks. Any input is welcomed.

Thanks heaps.

Nick

Hi guys, sorry forgot to add. I have done compression test. 190 all the way through. Quite high but *shrugs* all even. I think one might be on about 195 or so.

whats that test you do when you blow into the pipe into the inlet to see if its blocked or something??

yeah alright, i'll change the PCV valve first. Does anyone know if a blocked PCV can cause loss of excess oil? My mechanic told me it has something to do with vacuum or something in the head that sucks the oil up and through the valve stem seals? I have no idea

A blocked or stuck open PCV valve would not cause this unless you have screwed around with the PCV system in other ways.
Got a photo of your engine bay?

Considering the good compression numbers, i think you have dead valve stem seals.

So it can still be stem seals even if blocking off the PCV stops the smoking? Just need to know as the car is getting booked in soon.

*** I haven't modifed the PCV system in any way yet ***
