Water splashed into my TMIC

Hi guys,

Got a big problem, last Thursday with the insane rain lately. I was driving home and I drove though a massive puddle covering an expressway. Unfortunately the car next to me splashed tons of water all over the place and over my car, within seconds the car started spluttering and cut out.

Opened the bonnet and the TMIC inside guard thing was soaking. Assuming quite alot of water got in. Managed to call AA who jumped started me up (after 3 hours of waiting). Car started first time, didn't sound like it was struggling and a tiny bit of smoke out the exhaust. Literally cleared within 2 seconds. Big relief to me!!

Been driving the car since Thursday and come Tuesday morning the car wouldnt start. Tried jump her but nothing. I see the engine management light on? But she doesnt tickover or anything now.

Am i doomed? :( I'm trying to get it into my mates garage ASAP. But in the mean time....is there anything I can check? (quite easily)

take off ur top mount and check did any water get inside maybe take off all your spark plug leads and check for water above the plugs and dry it out and make sure the air filter is dry too!

water on intercooler wont do any harm its only if water gets sucked in through your intake will fuck your engine. is it cranking at all or just making a clicking sound

sounds to me like you have a dead battery due to a fucked alternator.

if the car is cranking and not starting u have either a fuel problem an igintion problem........or your battery is dead if your not even getting a crank sound your battery is dead. water slashing on your alternator will destroy your alternator. check those things.

the fact that aa had to come and start your car would indicate that your car is not charging the battery.

if water had got inside of your intake system the car would fuck itself buy spittinga rod or two.

Cheers for your quick reply guys!!

Appreciate all your help. I've taken your idea's and opinions in. I'll nip halfords tomorrow and get a sparkplug socket. Would something like this do?

http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/...165469_langId_-1?cm_vc=IOV4PDPZ1&iozone=PDPz1

Never taken the sparksplugs out from a car before, but I read a few helpful threads on here and pretty confident. Just need to make sure I have the right tools :) I'll check the plugs, and the dizzy cap tomorrow. Also will try the disconnecting the battery :)

If all fails, I will try get it to my mates garage so he can check the battery and alternator. I'm praying no water has got into the intake system? The airfilter seemed fine and didnt notice it being soaked.

After it started the first time, I must have drove it maybe another 100miles before she died again....

Water has most likely gotten into an electrical part/s (where it should not be). Get a can of WD40 or CRC, something that will displace moisture, take off your spark plug leads, distributor cap, and any connectors that may have been affected and spray them all. Basically, a good spray down with WD40 will do the trick, but you need to spray inside the affected connections, not just around and about. This happens often when we pressure wash our engines or drive through high water without the engine splash guard fitted. Spray inside the dianogstic (spelling) box if you see any moisture in there as well. I'm 100% certain a proper spray down will make the car run sweetly again.

Cheers for your help and info mate. Sorry for sounding like a complete noob, but once I spray inside and outside everything, do I then wipe it up properly? Or do you just leave it soaking in WD40?

leave it soak in mate just spray spark plug leads, coil pack, king lead, distrubitor and you can spray any other olectrical wires it protects them and wont do any harm try that and see how you get on:)

Excellent!

Last question, can someone confirm is it a 10mm spark plug socket? or 16mm? I've read 2 different threads on here, advising different sizes?

Cheers

16mm normal socket but a 10mm sparkplug socket.. go for a "draper" if you can.. these have a rubber inside that grabs the sparkplug once loosened.. :)

Just a quick update.

WD40'ed everywhere I could see, leads, dizzy, etc. Whilst the leads were off, thought id check the spark plugs. They seemed fine and in good condition, NGK ones as well! Checked to see if any water got down. Luckily everywere was bone dry.

Once everything had a soak, put everything back together and went to start her up! BRUMM!! She started fine, abit of stuttering also tiny bit of white smoke out the back. Let her warm up, then I took her for a drive. Seems completely fine with no issues. Got her back, let her cooldown on the timer. Turned her off, 30secs later started her again. Again no issues :)

Touch wood, I think everything is fine! :) Big thanks to you all!!
