alright lads, not really the right forum to be posting this on but iv never met a more helpful bunch who always try to help so here goes....

iv been offered a 2001 vw golf 1.8 gti turbo for a car that i currently own, the only problem thats worrying me is the fuel pump is apparently on its way out, its hard to start but if you try and start it then leave it for 15- 20 seconds it will start after that, would this be the fuel pump 100 percent or is there any thing else that it may be, would this have been causing the car to run lean the last while, i went out and drove the car and everything seemed fine, its just a bit worrying, also the eml (engine management light) was on, i would assume this would be because of the fuel pump?? any help greatly appreaiated...

Thanks Paul

Best thing to do if its ok with the owner is to get it on a comp at a garage to diognostic check it, should only cost about £30 but if there any prob's it will show up...

You need to see if from the point of ... if its "just" the fuel pump then why hasnt the current owner replaced it.

that was exactly my thoughts, he was previously after £150 cash but was ment to be replacing the pump, then said the car wasnt running and it needed the fuel pump replaced so hed do a straight swap, i said i wouldnt havean interest if the car wasnt running and he text me today to say that the car had just run out of petrol but hed still be willing to do a swap, sounds fairly dodgy to me but the car seemem to be driving spot on, its either take a chance on this golf or hold out and wait on the sale of my own car and get another starlet

sounds like it could be the coolant temp sensor, fuel pump shouldnt put the EML on.

get it on a scanner and go from there.

yep, if its dropping out and making the ecu think the cars coolant is say -50 it'll be chucking the fuel in there or the same the otherway round if its showing 150deg it'll be lean as hell.

if your worried it needs to be put on a scanner and the codes read, might be as simple as the coolant sensor which isnt that dear i wouldnt have thought

i now have a golf 1.8t 2001.
if you can wait for postage then go onto ebay and search for VAG fault code readers. buy the orange style plug in one. think its 20 quid delivered.
you can plug this in and it will tell you the fault code.

im a member on golfgtiforum.co.uk il post on there and see what the guys think. alough in IMO it does seem more suspect to summin else not pump.

however if you do get a golf 1.8t then get it remapped. mine went from 150bhp and 155 torque to 205bhp and 240torque. only cost 300 quid

alough do miss my glanza :(

vw are known for giving gearbox problems. The bearings are too small and get too hot if there driven hard. Then they break up inside the box, and take the crown wheel and pinion with them. Toyota all the way man.
