What can happen if an engine stands for a longtime

Depends on how its stored, but it can develop rust spots. Aslong as it was stored with oil it should be fine.

engine storage

@peter88: 300+ days is a long minute. i'd say give it a good look all around the engine bay. frayed wires. kinked pipes. extremely rusted spots. all worth a check before you make it road-worthy again. as AdamB said, if it was stored with the fluids in place, it should be fine. if you're planning to restore it, flush all fluids, esp your brake fluid. and run it in gently.. :D

Ok cool I shall do that, I don't think the rust spots are bad at all but my fuel rail and injectors seem a bit rusty

time to brush up

i'd say get some time on your hands, and lots of patience, then go at it with a wire brush for the metal surfaces, and a stiff-bristled brush (or even an old toothbrush) for the harder to reach areas and rubber seals, joints, pipes etc.
you can dab stained spots with warm soapy water and dab away with a damp cloth rinsed in clear water. don't go too mad with the water.. :D

My car was parked up for over two years when I was in Australia and started first time round when I came home. Great engines

Mines parked on the drive way for nearly 2 years its been under sealed all that and been regular started and the car's been covered up. Like glanzadude said they are good engines.

Mine was stood for 4 years. Fuel pump was corroded. Changed all fluids, new rad, all belts, cambelt tensioner bearings, plugs and filters.

Well what can I say. On my own experience - rust is not the main issue with the Jap import cars. I'd say You will have to replace the camshaft/crackshaft seals afterwards. Not straight after but sitting outside won't do any good for them.

Not running the car for 1 year - won't do any good to the whole car! At the end of the day it was designed to get hot. The sensors might get wet - become faulty, bad lubrication - again water, oh yeah almost forgot - if you have your handbrake on - you will need new rear calipers very soon - that's most likely!

handbrake seizure

@Paul_JJ: i concur on the handbrake note. there are some slow weekends when nothing's really happening so i don't get to go anywhere and the car sits from say friday til sunday. i've noticed this especially when it rains or drizzles friday night, that the next time i go to take off and release the handbrake, the pads are still seized to the disk and you can actually here them thud when they 'tear' away from the disk. i freaked out the first time and so i stopped the car to go check thinking i had dropped my rear axle on the driveway. i could clearly see the pad-stamp on the disks where they'd clamped down over the weekend. if mine sat for a weekend only, i can imagine what a year would do to them.. :)

what if the cars been standing outside for 6 months, with engine oil still inside.

After changing the oil would i need to prime the engine and turbo before starting it?

to prime or not?

well, after the service, it should be good to go. priming isn't a life-or-death necessity, unless your oil pressure light stays on longer than necessary then you have to kill the engine and remove the king lead then crank it over a couple of times to get the oil going. you'll be fine. don't sweat it too much. these are sturdy engines built to last.. :D
