lol, you cant really get a light engine if you want to put a bigger one in place. that extra weight can be worth it if it has good punch but obviously if i was going to put any engine in place i would prefer to tackle it myself and make the necessary changes. only thing i would have to get done would be the wiring.

I lead a way to busy life to have the time and energy to even attempt an engine conversion :p

I think a 2.0litre Vtec mini or a motorbike engined kit car would be the top of my list... Imagine how fun they would be!

soo many people have the right idea goin for the 205 route. I have owned 2 205 xs's which is the one below a 1.6 gti and they handle brilliantly. mi16-chris can agree with me lol. I will someday build myself a 205 track car too. mi16 engines are class, but gettin on, get yourself a gti6 engine with the 6 speed box, or to keep the sweet handeling get a 106 gti/vts engine wired in. Light engine and decent useable power. gti6 brakes and you would be laughin. for 6k all in you would have a seriously sorted one too. I priced a few bits there for myself lookin at one, and for a good base car, £500-£1000, engine, gti6 an box, £800, £100 mnore for gti6 brakes, fit yourself over time and the rest you can play with in your own fashion. Honestly, for value, you can't beat for fwd track car in my opinion!

how about a bike engined kit car? looked at R1 or fireblad engined MK Indy. Will defeat any of the above round a track!

I agree with this guy ^^^^^^^^^^^^

If you want an amasing car for handling, being RWD and depending on what engine is in it, a fast as fook straight line speed, get a kit car like an MK, Tiger or build you own Locost.

http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/sales/629760.htm - Tiger for around 6k
http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/sales/654740.htm- MK for just over 6k

all of the posts have good ideas...but they will either cost considerably more, or be way slower on track than a metro with the right mods. All the other suggestions have been done a thousand times. A metro has that element of surprise. There is a v tec metro I know of that destroys everything it comes across on track...and if you don't want all that work and extra weight all k series engines weigh exactly he same and have the same engine mountings. I honestly cant think of anything that would be cheaper, quicker, or more fun on track. Why wouldn't you get one? :homer:

Cheap 172 Clio? Either an early phase one or a very cheap 172 Cup. Was a trackday suited Cup for 2.5k about few weeks back, was a cat d though.

you have to remember with any road based car, everything you do to make it a track car takes away from what it actually is. An actual kit car will be built to track, so everything you do to make it handle better is only improving on the design of the car. Nothing on this thread will beat a well built R1 engined MK round a track, nor will they be as rewarding or fun to drive, nor carry speed almost as well through corners. Remember, on a track 80% of your time is going in to and coming out of corners, so a well built less powerful car like the MK will more than make up the time lost on any straights to a more powerful car (then again they arent slow on that front either - my mates R1 MK indy 0-60 in a shade over 3.5secs.....and that isnt even in the top 5 reasons for why you would choose that car!

actually the 1900cc standard engine is far better suited as it has better torque and is fairly tunable, also alot lighter. there is a plce down here that pretty much does peugeot's well thats all thats there when i pass. what about an old golf gti mk1 or 2? or an old fiesta rs. can i hear a cheap cossie lol i think not
