0-60mph: 6.9 or 8.2 secs?

Toyota quote a 8.2 time in the brochures for both EP82 GT's and EP91 Glanza V's.

My guess is that is a conservative figure to cover the automatic and heavier equipped models. That is the official book time taken from a 1990 Starlet brochure, a 1992 Starlet Brochure and a 1996 Glanza Brochure.

I've been on the trail of where the 6.9 figure originates and found it a few weeks ago.

Autocar (longstanding UK-based motoring magazine) flew Peter Nunn across to Japan for a preview of the new EP82 Starlet back in Feb 1990.

In the interview for the magazine Yuuichi Sorimachi, the chief engineer in charge of the new EP82 Starlet, boasted that his standard 1990 GT was faster than a 1.9 Peugeot 205 GTi. He even quoted a quartermile time of 15.3 secs.

So basically there is both official and unofficial figures quoted for the Starlet GT. You glanza folks are slightly slower but not by much.

A mate of mine with a saxo took my Glanza for a spin and he said it would poo all over his car. My Glanza only has a decat, panel filter and boost restriction removed. So around the 7 seconds dead mark is my guess.

Just to add to this one.

Taken from the Feb 1990 Starlet-specific edition of MotorFan here's the results of their roadtesting:

I would imagine so. The chief engineer quoted 6.9 and a 15.20 quartermile so it would sound about right. Damn I wish I could read Japanese!

well in my glanza i have done a few 0-60 runs timed with a g tech. the best i have got so far is 6.5 secs and thats with boost restriction removed hks actuator at 0.8 bar, no other mods. all my other results were around the 6.8 - 7.5 secs mark. these runs were in the wet too and traction was an issue so i think it can do better.

Yea I have the G-Tech Pro SS, the best I managed was 6.4 but that was in the dry running stock boost and coilovers with an apexi filter.

Its only really effective on Glanza's which have a boost restriction in 1st and 2nd to aid traction. The GT's don't have this.

Hi buddy, iv noticed this in my glanza. Gt felt slightly quicker in the lower gears.

Can you tell me the best way to remove the boost restriction?

cheers

It's a 60 second job to undo if you don't like it mate, search for the word solenoid on the forum for more discussions on the topic.

thanks jay. Just started to wonder if this is worth doing though, if it increase traction with the solenoid would it not be worth just leaving it?

Any thoughts from you guys?

to be honest it doesnt really increase traction, and 2nd gear is stuck with lower boost also, which in a standard starlet unless the conditions are terrible you wont be spinning up in 2nd gear either, so it makes a big difference in acceleration to have the boost up permanantly.

i personally never needed the extra traction as simple throttle technique easily combats this neway

the wifes car is near enough standard GT quadlight and I recorded with a gps device 0-60 in 7.1 in wet conditions the other week which for an old car is pretty impressive.

i have a glanza, and got the solenoid bypassed and i can keep up with a new corsa vxr, civic type r, to around 70mph.
i did a few tests using my mates gps, and the results from 0-60 with the petrol needle on the last white line before empty were,
6.5, 6.6, 6.6 and 6.5
i only got a d-cat, and stainless exhaust, also air filter.

6k then change up. 2nd gear sees me to 50mph ish...haven't done a proper 0-60 since I first got it, and it managed 8s then and that was my first day of driving the car, also my bro was timing it, and he weighs about 17stone- slowed it down a bit? lol. Chances are I would be a lot quicker now. Might give it a go tomorrow and time it properly*

* on a private road ofc.

How can that be i just about hit 70 in second.
