one of the wheel studs snapped today,i was told i could hammer it out ,but wondering does the whole plate with the 4 studs have to come of ,to replace the broken one
No there is a cut out on the rear of the hub to allow you to knock one of the studs out at a time. You can do this with the driveshaft and hub in place.
Knock it out, fit new one from behind if you have space...
Knock it in a bit then use wheel nut and washers or the wheel as a spacer and pull it in place by tightening the wheel nut.
