Bigger Brakes Availability

I need to do a scrapyard run again soon and see if they have anything!!

On mine i have fitted MK1 (AW11) MR2 calipers. They are no bigger diameter wise (just under 260mm) but they are 22mm wide not a warp and fade inducing 18mm!!

I used (shock, gasp) Vauxhall corsa discs which were supposed to be 22mm but nearer 24mm so only just fitted! The caliper is spaced approx 2-3mm to fit.

I want to fit some twin pots next then eventually ~280mm twin pots

what happens if you overkill your brakes ? Yes I understand it may start to lock up easily but once installed and welded in place can you play around with some valves and biases to adjust ?
When do you have to start looking at replacing your master cylinder (how will you know when) and what would you replace it to ?

did the 277mm discs and calipers fit behind 15's pumba GT? as ive got 14's on at the min and need to buy new wheels and wast sure if they would fit behind 15's or not?

Those discs and calipers look like the ST165 ones Pumba. Tried fitting them last week but wasnt really worth the bother as the disc is practically the same size and the size of the pad is also practically the same. I might try fitting Late EK9 Type-R Front Discs and Calipers.

yes early st185 calipers are basically the same as st165 items. as regards performance, its the THICKNESS of the disc that makes this set up fade free and the pad might be not the biggest but the caliper has far more power than the standard starlet caliper. just my experience. mine worked well on the track.

I didn't put the wheel on while the new caliper was on. But I think it will be ok for 15". I am using 14" sparco for the winter at the moment.

Ted:
Well said, the braking efficiency will increase as long as:
1. The caliper piston(s) is more powerful or bigger pads used.
2. the disc is thicker or bigger to give better cooling.

then I will need at least a 10mm spacer behind the new discs, and extended wheel studs (+13mm) from Ebay.

I dont think my front wheels would clear the arches if I put a 10mm spacer behind the disc. They would scrub on the lip.

Is the part of the bigger disc that sits on the spacer any thicker than the GT disc??

So are the majority of toyotas 131mm spacing so the caliper will be a direct bolt on. How do you know the size of disc required for each setup cause wouldnt it be different from the original car that the calipers are from. Ive got 16" wheels so i guess i should be able to fit several different calipers but its lowered 60mm so not sure how much i could get away with spacing the disc out.

Just another quick update, still fail to find which model of Toyota my calipers and discs are from. Ran back from the japanese scrapyard and only model that available there is a 2002 Toyota Celica and they are only single pot! I want to get some new pads, so will bring the old pads to the shop to match with some EBC or Mintex.

I will probably re-drill the discs tomorrow and bolt the caliper carriers at the back of the hub bracket to see if it can centre the disc without any spacer. Just took another accurate measurement to the discs, they are 270mm x 28mm to be exactly.

As for clearance on the 15", it shouldn't be any problem as far as I can see.

i would think 3G discs vented and grooved with red stuff or green stuff if more of a daily driver would be ok for any setup with the starlet being such a light small car, you only really need big brakes like 4 pots if you have a scooby or skyline or any type of big saloon car

yes, i agreed. But after 15 years of using, i think it's a good idea to have a change with a new set but that would cost way too much than any 2nd hand other toyota 2 pots brakes. Hence they are here!:)

Can anyone tell me what length the standard wheel studs are on a starlet ep82? also how much longer do they need to be?

And another question does anyone run brake disc's with a center hub diameter on the disc bigger than the size of the hub?

Cheers

Pass the first question, from measurement, the rear studs are about 1.5 inch long, not sure about the front one. And I think you couldn't fit a bigger bore discs to the starlet hub as it's dangerous to do so? Correct me if I am wrong, somebody?

My vauxhall discs have a larger bore then toyota (i cant remember the size tho) I had my mate make me up some little spigot rings from alloy to centre the disc.

As for studs, i keep meaning to look into longer studs. I know for a fact aw11 are shorter (about 5mm) as i fitted 4 to my gt as i sheared off one removing and refitting.

I will have to take a look at scrapyards when i get a chance, maybe like a celica or something has longer studs.
