Car driving me mental

it may be a wheel bearing you know, even in neutral it makes the noise and when coasting.

Quite likely mate!

Which part do you mean? Push back the brake disc guards, the thin metal plate-like bit that sits behind the disc. Get a stick a push it well back so its nowhere near touching the disc!

Dunno what car that is, but you can clearly see the disc splash guard that sits behind the disc. Just push that back so its well away from the disc.

If you mean which part to grab to check the wheel bearing; just grab the wheel spokes and rock it back and forth. Shouldn't move very much , if theres a lot of play it'll be the wheel bearing!

Lol yeh, can you highlight ecatly which part your talking abot to push back in a pic?

just dont want to be screwing anything else up.

does it sound like a wheel bearing on the vid?

ony prob is that before it used to only screetch on full lock, now it does it all the time, surely it cant be a bearing if it used to do it before on full lock?

Tbh the vid isn't great lol. Not very loud on my laptop so all I can make out is a faint scraping whine!

Heres the pic, but I don't think its going to be the splashguard tbh. But just for future reference:

Push the areas in red back with a screwdriver or something!

lol garages round my end are dodgy fkrs, how much you think it will cost if it was a bearing?

also how long would it take?

2 hours labour I'd imagine, could be quite pricey.

Could do most of it yourself though. I took the hub off then got my dads friend to take it to work and press the old bearing out / new one in. You could take the hub up to a garage and ask how much they'd charge to change over the bearings...probs be like £20-40. Luckily my dads mate did it for free! :p

to determine whether its the wheel bearing, jack it up like said before and shake the wheel up and down like an M.O.T'er would do. there should be play left and right as thats how you steer but NOT up and down.

you wont be able to hear the noise when jacked up not because of the speed of the car, its because the wheels are not under load of the engine which makes the wheel sit at an angle slightly causing the the brake disc to rub on the caliper.

check that first

A shock absorber!? Well, you say the sounds coming from the front. Check the top mounts and check to see if either of the shocks are leaking and the springs are seated correctly etc etc.

I don't know how a worn shock would make a noise like that - definately sounds like something rotating. I would've thought bush/shock would be more of a creaking whilst turning or something. Very odd!

Lol it first started off with a creeking noise when turning!

so i think this could be the problem, who knows, taking it to the garage on monday morning so should find out by monday afternoon.

forget suggesting, no one can suggest something right without being hands on! otherwise there would be no garages thanks to TGTT.com

did you check for any play in wheel?

yep, no play in wheel at all mate.

the place i went to now jus specialise in wheels only, nothing else so they said to take it to main garage on monday and they jack it up and take a look to see if it may be soch absorber or something, cant quite figure out whats the prob at the moment :(

Very true! I'm just telling you to try a bunch of things, hoping we'll hit something! lol

Why did he suggest it might be suspension/bush though? Did he take it for a test drive?

definately a rotating noise, i cant see why it would be a shock.

ive heard it on my mates car, his piston from the brakes was sticking

i would like to hear what the problem actually turns out to be
